Ford Escort ZX2 dead battery mystery?

Recently I left my light on in my car for about 9 hours. So my first thought is to jump it. So I did and it didnt work. So I took the battery out (cause it was at my school) and took it home to charge it. Let it charge over night put it in and tried to start it and nothing. No lights turned on, dome light, door sound, nothing. It didnt turn over at all. So my question is, could it simply be that the batteries prongs need to be cleaned off, or possibly that I need a new starter. I need anwsers.
