yes the pully needs replacing, and if the belt is showing wear thats the time to replace it also. The rear brakes sound like they are drum brakes, with shoes and not disc pads. If so you'll have to back the slack adjustors off with an adjusting tool or two screw drivers. One screw driver to release the self adjustor lever and one to turn the adjustor at the same time

(ford escort MK6 1996 1.8 TD) I have 2 problems with my ford escort 1 is the cambelt and the other is the rear break drums. i recentley started it up to hear this knocking sound coming from the cambelt cover i opened it up to find that there was this round pice of plastic that had broked away from 1 of the pulleys and now there is a bit of slack on the belt does this mean i will have to replace the belt and pulley? secondly i have been trying to change the rear break pads and cant seem to get the rear drum off, there are no screws holding the drum on i have been trying to knock it off with a rubber mallet but it wont budge what i want to know is do i have to remove the big nut in the centre?
