Ford escort immobiliser problems?

I have just bought an R reg Escort 1.8 Convertible for the Summer!! (if we get one!!) but it would seem that I can not get the immobiliser to turn off. The radio comes on but then the whole of the electrics go dead. Is it the immobiliser or the electrics or am I simply not turning the key properly to activate then deactivate the immobiliser? Is the code on the keys being red? I only have the two "black" keys not the red one! The little red light comes on and then flashes so the immobiliser is set but....The last time I tried to do this I could not even reset the immobiliser!!
 
You'll have to find if your keys have a battery and chip in. The chip holds the information to unlock the immobilizer, but if the battery is dead, the immobilizer doesn't get unlocked and so kicks in half a mile down the road.

It doesn't matter what colour key it is, they should all be equipped to unlock the immobilizer. The electrics would be because the immobilizer cut in.
