Ford Escort 91 4cy gear shifting stutter?

these maybe be inaccurate signs, but...

sometimes this happens, more often up or down hill (maybe)
seems to be okay for a while if I let the car rest
seems to be better now the fuel take is full...
I am carrying a heavy load...
p.s. it is automatic gear shifting
when it really acts up, it says check engine light
