wont start!!! i have had my car for a while now and never had any problems with it!!

i went to the shops yesterday evening and everything was fine. came out from the shops and it would not start, just struggling to start, it will not even try to start now just a clicking noise form the alternator.
all the electrics go mental as well the abs light comes on the speedometer needle goes to the top to bottom as does the temperature gauge too!!!

i started the car with jump leads and managed to get it home, turned it off tried to turn it on again and the same happened. im thinking it may be alternator or the battery is completely dead. has anyone experienced problems like these with there cougar.

it is a late 2001 on a y plate 2.5 v6 please help!!!

The 'click click click' when trying to start means a flat battery.
When the car senses a complete lack of battery voltage, the first time you turn the ignition back on, the instrument needles will perform a 'sweep' of the dials & then return to rest - this is completely normal.
Sounds like it's just a flat battery, but take it to a decent local independent tyre, exhaust & battery place & they'll check that the car's charging at the same time.

its not your alternator if it was it wouldnt make a sound i would go with the battery check the battery cables make sure they are on tight if they are you might need a new battery
