For students who have gone from engineering to physics or the other way?

At the moment (I'm in first year) I'm considering majoring in either mathematical physics, physics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or civil engineering.

I would like to have people's opinions on the differences between the two and why they changed from one to the other!

I originally picked physics because I was interested in the fundamentals of science. It seemed to me that learning about the building blocks of the universe and the basic laws that they all obey would answer every question I might have.

After meeting a few physicists, I concluded they would have trouble finding the bathroom in a strange land, and were about as adept in understanding the universe.

By then, I had become interested in applying science as it was already known, particularly in feedback control systems. As I looked into these things, I became fascinated at what could be done by applied science, right now. From then on, it was just picking which engineering field seemed most needed and, at that time, it was electronics.
