Liverpool or Sheffield? I'm an American planning on applying to these three universities as a freshman in 2010. I really know nothing about these cities, but I'm planning on studying anthropology and/or archaeology (through to a PhD). My ideal city wouldn't be grossly pretentious or yuppy, but would rather have a bit of a characterizing roughness, if that makes any sense. I want a lot of city pride, be that simply for the city itself or for some sort of sports team. Also, I want to be able to walk or bike just about everywhere, and when I'm not walking I'd prefer to take a bus or train rather than a car. Finally, I really want to experience the excitement of city life (without necessarily having to go clubbing every week), yet still be able to venture outside of the city limits to some more rural, rugged territory. I'm a competitive distance runner, so I'd love the opportunity to go for runs through that stereotypical "British countryside" away from the hustle-and-bustle of living in an urban environment.
I'm trying to stay away from Southern cities like Exeter and London because I've heard how expensive it can be farther South. Also, while I'd absolutely love to live in Scotland, I'm leaning more towards England because I can finish my degree in less time there. Should I still consider a school like Glasgow, regardless or the fact that I'll be spending an extra year there?
