My 1993 Pontiac Grand Prix sat for 2 months until it could be fixed which ended up being the ignition control module. That part is fixed. Now, before my car went down it shifted just fine. Two months later after sitting, it won't shift. Does anyone have an idea what it could be? Could it be as simple as a clogged filter (do transmissions have filters)? Don't laugh - I know nothing about what's under the hood.

That's an easy one and happens a lot when the fluid is badly in need of changing. The valve body gets all gummed up from dirty fluid and then after sitting a long time the buildup of varnish and crud in the valve body gets sticky as it begins to harden and causes the valves to stick.

Hi Lynn, filters dont clog from the car sitting but fluid might get low except low fluid would give the transmission other concerns like slipping when you corner or no movement at all. When you say it wont shift I hope you mean it stays in first gear and not that the shifter wont move, if the shifter wont move then you have a safety lock concern or linkage concern but I think you meant not shifting thru gears as you drive. That would probably be an electrical problem(fuse?) if your trans is electronically controlled or a vacuum problem if it has vacuum modulator on front of transmission( a small vacuum line goes from throttle body((carburetor looking thing))to small can looking thing on trans) But if you had no problem before earlier repair then had no shifting after repair then most likely someone accidentally left something unplugged or damaged.

Yes transmissions do have filters. But you might want to make sure the transmission fluid is topped off since it had sat around for a couple months. Fluid being low, will not let the car shift and such too.

Transmissions do have a filter screen, but if the transmission engages and the only symptom is no up shift, it's not going to be a filter problem.
This is probably a 4T60E transmission. First do the simple stuff - check the linkage and the fluid level and condition then have a scan performed to see if there are any default codes in the pcm.
If all that checks out - unfortunately - further diagnosis will be needed.

Trans do have filters but i think you need to look at the linkage underneath where it goes to the trans from the shifter check fluid also.might be just stuck closed in place try to giggle it and make sure no tenion is on the steering wheel
