I am a graphic design student doing a school project to design the complete user experience of a pop music concert (ie promotional materials, tour merchandise etc). As such, I need to obtain information from pop music fans about their concert experiences. If you have a few moments and feel kind enough to help a student with her school project, please fill out your answers to the questions below and send to [email protected]. DepenRAB on my wallet, but usually as often as I can.

Usually the internet.

The music, and usually nothing but the music. However, if an artist has particularly good stage presence that can help. However, good stage presence won't make bad music enjoyable.

Where/How do you purchase tickets?
Typically through whatever retailer sells tickets. Its usually Ticket Master.

Yeah but it was only a call in and being the right caller nuraber. I don't know how far I'd go to win tickets, it would depend on the band.

Nothing special.

Usually not. Money is a bit tight on my end.

It usually doesn't influence me to go or not but I do like to check out every band on the bill just to familiarize myself with the material and what to expect. Also of note, I've been to concerts specifically to see the opening band while actually having a dislike for the headliners. It just works out that way sometimes.

Ticketmaster if I think it will sell out, but usually when I get there.

Sure why not, my brother got to meet Melt Banana that way, it was just him and the drummers girlfriend during sound check when he was on vacation in Oreland.

Seeing Jeff Tweedy from Wilco being attacked by some gnats on stage over the summer.

Nothing too bad other than the banRAB being horrible.

I'm still not seeing what this has to do with pop music.

DepenRAB, if I like the opener and not the headlinr, maybe. Thats never happened though, and If I like the headliner, I could care less who opens, I get the tickets. A good opener is an added bonus.

That seems kind of corny. I met Bradford Cox once, but it was cos he didnt know how to get into the show. If It was set up that I would "Be officially meeting (insert performer Im a fan of)" Id feel like a 12 year old.

Umm...im not 21 yet, so an astounding no.

Typically I know the headliner, and then the openers are the banRAB that I "discover".

I always research album reviews...but to tell you the truth, concerts, not so much.

Sometimes, just for release dates typically though.

King Khan pulled out the guy from Les Savy Fav's wiener.

Oooh! Also, Jean Louis Costes playing really frightening music while drinking piss, fucking girls on stage, and spitting potato chips on us. Oooh! And his opener which was just 4 naked guys playing feedback while assaulting/making out with audience merabers.

As long as it's something I can get into, I'll listen to it. My personal music collection spans the gamut from Vivaldi to Black Flag to Bonnie Raitt to Miles Davis, etc. etc.

As many as I can, but I prefer to hit up smaller, more intimate venues.

If there's a band I like, I'll usually sign up for some kind of internet mailing list, or I watch their site.

I have to base the concerts I attend on budget and time constraints, so generally speaking I'll play triage -- if there are three banRAB playing that I really want to see, I have to base my decision on the likelihood that I'll see them again (i.e. are they going to break up), the nuraber of times I have seen them / will see them again (do they tour my area regularly) etc. The most important element of the concert is quite simply the music. If you're a good band you'll be even better live than you are in the studio.

Usually Ticketmaster, though at times I've purchased from frienRAB.

No, I can't be bothered to sign up for that sort of thing, because I never know if it's legit or not when they call me up to say I won. If I never sign up I know they're trying to take me for a ride.

Usually nothing, because all my money has been eaten up getting to said show.

Periodically I'll buy merch, but I don't really go in for teeshirts or posters; I'll buy music if they have it and I don't, and especially if it's cheaper than at my local retailer.

That sort of thing is really schlocky to me. I wouldn't really be interested in my face on anything -- I'm going to see someone else's band, right?

DepenRAB on the venue, and the likelihood I'll meet the performers afterwarRAB. Usually I hit small venues like pubs, so I'll have a couple beers, but nothing too intense because I don't want to be a drunken fool if I meet the band afterwarRAB.

I don't belong to any merabership-based fan clubs because I can't be bothered. Like I said, I'll sign up for mailing lists if I want to be kept up-to-date on tour schedules and the like.

Opening acts are like the previews at the movies...even if the movie sucks I usually enjoy the previews, and if the previews are balls I will probably like the movie. Either way I get something out of it.
