For everyone who's been in college and knows about dorm rooms?

I was wondering, for when I go to college, if it's better to live on campus in a dorm or get an apartment not far from the college. What would be cheaper or does it really matter?
Plus, I can handle any type of enviroment. I heard dorms can get pretty rowdy and that honestly doesn't bother me.
 
Whether or not an apartment is cheaper depends on the school and location. But studies have shown that students who live off-campus their first year are more likely to drop/fail out - they didn't establish a social circle, they didn't make as many friends, they didn't participate in study groups or campus activities, and they didn't feel connected to the school. Living on campus, even if just for your first year, can make a big difference.
