For all the gym freaks etc...?

A friend of mine who's a bit over-weight got a gym membership about a year ago, she's gone constantly for the whole year, but she hasn't lost any weight. This girl that we know said she should just use things like the treadmill till she runs off that excess fat and then start doing weights to gain muscle, because if she tries to gain muscle while she's still overweight then she isn't going to lose the weight, but actually gain it by having muscle?! Is this true? I just found it really interesting. Thanks (:
Thanks guys. I try telling her that going to the gym and then eating chocolate and sh*t food isn't going to get her fit at all. She's a bit of a know it all and thinks that it wont do anything if she's going to the gym... Hello.. Who is she kidding >.> No one but herself. She's a bit of a dopey mole (:
