For a lovely mahogany dining room table, should I use a table cloth?

To all ye homemakers, mums out there. I know that this must seem like a really stupid question to you. I have just bought a second hand john e coyle rope edge mahogany dining room table, which I think looks really lovely. So it seems a shame to me, to cover it up with a table cloth when I invite people over for a formal dinner. But I am worried about ruining my nice "new" table. Does one usually use a table cloth for formal dining when you have a really nice dining room table, or what sort of placemats does one use? Does one use runners in the middle, but without a tablecloth, where you put the trivets for hot plates? I have bought some Xmas tea candle holders to put on the table too.I know that for most Mum's this is probably so retarded, but I am a guy and I know nothing about things like this. For the record I do have one white and one red/maroon damask table cloth which I bought some years ago, but have never used.
Also would something like plexiglass work, as a glass tabletop is probably into the hundreds. I live in England.
Any advice welcome. I think the table is so nice one should showcase it, but I don't want scratches, candle wax etc all over the table. Particular with Christmas drinking. Somebody always spills everything !
