For a 5' 8" man what size bicycle would I need for myself?

If I was looking on ebay or craigslist what size of bike would I look for? Before, I would buy the bike?I don't want to buy the wrong size bike. To small or too large??
 
Probably about a 52 cm road bike, or 20" mountain bike.

There are so many variables there is no way to know for sure without test riding several models and sizes. Your local bike shop is the place to go for correct sizing. Even after selecting a frame that's right, you may end up needing to tweak bar height and stem slope to adjust the distance from saddle to bar and riding angle. Some like a more prone riding position, some more upright.

Can get complicated if you find yourself riding a whole lot.
 
Frame size goes more by your inseam length then height. For a mountain bike take your inseam X .59 to get the frame size in inches. For a road, hybrid, or fitness bike take your inseam X .65 to get the correct size. The bike shop will help you select the correct bike.
