Hi! I am wondering if anyone here has any opinions or advice on the mattress toppers that are popular these days? I am thinking of purchasing one, but not sure if they can help a bad back? I have two herniated disc's and toss and turn most of the night sleeping on a pillow-top (semi-soft)) mattress. Just bought this mattress a few months ago, and found it doesn't do much for my back; I wake up in pain every day. Does anyone here use a topper like this, and does it help at all?

Thanks so much; looking forward to some opinions.

Judy

My daughter had a fusion three years ago and has a memory foam topper from Costco. She just loves it. She took it to college and it helps the old college mattress. When she comes home for the weekend she really misses having it. I don't think it's the 4 inch one but it does the job for her. cas

I have one too. I had to get it because, like Baybreeze, I'm a side sleeper. I would wake sore from my ankles to my shoulders (I'm a bit bony, so there's no "cushion" for my joints).

If your down topper isn't too thick you may want to consider putting that or a cover on top of the foam pad. If you don't and you sweat at all in your sleep your pad will get stained.

A few cons -
The 4" is very very heavy. You will need someone else to help you with it. If you're unlucky the pad may shift - again you'll need help getting it realigned. Since it's heavy, it can over time cause your mattress to collapse some - that may depend on the bed though. It can make sitting in bed a bit uncomfortable and, in my case, I've partially dislocated my hips and shoulder while rolling over in bed because I sink in (I have some hypermobile joints, so most won't have that problem).

Caszyman, thanks, the more I read and hear, the more convinced I am that I am going to order one!

Aether, Oh my, dislocating your hip and shoulder doesn't sound good. Sorry to hear that happened to you. I think Instead of the 4 inch topper, I might try the 2 inch one and do what you said...put the down topper on top of the foam one. I'll soon need a stepstool to get into my bed with all this stuff on it! I just hope it doesn't shift all over the place.

Take care, both of you, and thanks!

Hi, you do a Advanced Search by looking at the button bar going across the screen under the search button. Then do a search by key word located on the right side of the screen. Try memory foam and I think you will get a slew of information on previous threaRAB here on HealtrabroadoarRAB.

If my memory serves me correctly, these were given positive reviews.

Hope you are doing better Judy.

I think mine is 3", I cannot remeraber the brand I got , but I actually got it in WalMart several years ago. My mother bought one in another store somewhere but had no clue about the density...so hers is worthless to her. She said hers feels like there's nothing there, but that is because it's light and theres no density to the foam. I just looked it up and if you want one that is dense but still a bit cushy, it should be around a 4 lb. density. However, I am not sure if all manufacturers put this info on their packaging.
I have a queen sized bed and yes the topper is a bit heavy, but if it slides out of place a bit, it's quite easy to just pull on it and put it back into place.
Mine came with a cover for it so you probably also want to find one with a cover. When it's new, it does have an odor to it, but it does fade away and after a few days I didn't notice it anymore. I, too, will need a stepstool soon LOLOL. I hope this info helps you out!

I don't have a herniated disk, but have had some back issues. I have a memory foam topper from QVC that I LOVE! When I travel, I can't wait to get home to sleep in my own bed with it's memory foam topper!

I would recommend one to anyone needing some extra something to add to their existing mattresses. BTW, my current mattress is 13 years old and it's made a huge difference adding the memory foam topper!

Hi, I bought a memory foam mattress topper and I love it. If you buy one, make sure you get one with alot of density, otherwise it won't feel like you have any cushioning. I had bought one before my back problems were ever diagnosed. I was getting worse & worse & couldnt' understand why. I bought 2 new mattresses, the last with a pillowtop (but the mattress itself was very firm), it didnt help; so I bought I a down filled mattress topper, that didnt help; then I bought the memory foam topper and put this on top of everything else (LOL....good thing for deep pocket sheets)...well that didnt help either. I ended up having severe spinal stenosis caused by several things, so nothing was going to make my pain any better at that time. But once I had surgery and was feeling better, ooohh man I love that memory foam topper. I sleep on my sides, so the memory foam gives enough firm cushioning for my shoulders, otherwise they would hurt.

Thanks, everyone, for the advice! Diet, thanks for the hint on doing a search; I will surely do that! Stefarina, sounRAB like I better get myself one since you like yours so much!!

And, Baybreeze, I am like you, I got the pillow top mattress, then I bought the down filled topper, and also one of those egg-crate thingy's...which I don't like because it leaves a big body impression in the muddle of the bed where I sleep. So, now I think I will go ahead and get a foam topper, probably the 4 inch one. I sleep on my side, also, so this might help me with my shoulders, too. I will do the advanced search first, but I think I will order one tonight on-line!

Thanks, all, appreciate your fast replies! My best to you all!

Judy,
One nice thing about purchasing from the shopping tv network I mentioned is that you have 30 days to try it, and if you don't like, you can return it without any problems. Mine is a Bodipedic brand and it comes with a nice soft cover that zips all around it, but can be washed in the laundry.

It makes a huge difference, and I sure wish I had it last spring when I had major surgery.

Whatever kind you buy, let us know if you noticed improvements once it's on your bed!

I don't think you will regret the purchase!
Stefarina :)

Hi Baybreeze and Stefarina,

Thanks for all the good advice. Baybreeze, I was going to get the 3 inch, but after what you mentioned about getting one that is both dense and still a little cushy, I probably would like the 4 inch one. The site I was looking at, which sells overstocked items, has both sizes. Getting one with a cover is a good idea.

Stefarina, I haven't seen them lately on that shopping network. I have a charge with the place I mentioned above, so I was going to order it from there. I have been getting so many outrageous hospital bills this past month (from my visit with heart attack), I don't want to spend the cash, so I thought I woud charge it. These bills are so totally off the wall with charges for "incidentals", they are enough to keep a person up at night wondering what kind of "incidentals!

Hope you both are doing well, and thanks for your help. I'll let you know how I like the topper!
