FM tranmitter iPod adapters broke when used in 2005 Dodge Neon?

I own a 2005 Dodge Neon, which has a cigarette lighter/power outlet that I use to plug my iPod FM transmitter in to. I used to use my transmitter in a different car, and it worked fine without any problems. However, after using it ONCE in the Neon, it refused to work anymore, no matter what car I put it in. Figuring it was just the adapter, I bought a new one, a different kind all together. I first used it in another car, and again, it worked fine without problems. Again, after using it in the Neon ONCE it stopped working all together no matter what car it was put in. I am extremely angry that this happened, because the adapters weren't cheap, and I'm not a huge fan of the radio.

Any idea why they would just stop working after one use in that car or how I could fix them?
