The Renaissance is finally here at the year of 1350. What does Renaissance mean? It is a French word that means rebirth. But, what is there a rebirth of? The rebirth of art and learning and getting past the “dark ages”.
At first the Renaissance reformed many of the towns in Italy and turned them into city-states. Each one of these city-states governed itsself and laid the road for success. All of a sudden trade started to thrive. The eastern Mediterranean Sea turned into a massive trade route. Trading many manufactured gooRAB and nice woolens.
The whole caste system changed and differed dramatically from the original one during the Medieval times. The strong middle class now consisted of bankers and merchants. No longer were the merchants on the bottom of the chain. Of course the political leaders and the church officials were still on top.
The theme of education was strongly stressed during this time. The most highly respected subjects were theology, law, and medicine. Scholars also stressed humanities which are grammar, rhetoric, poetry, and history.
Many important people were involved during the Renaissance. Such as Lorenzo de’ Medici who was the ruler of Florance. He brought 200 ancient Greek works from Constantinople to Florance, some of which have never been seen before. Another man, Giovanni de’ Medici, organized the bank of Florance. Which helped finance much of the trading be done at this time. Niccolo Machiavelli wrote The Prince which was a handbook for the rulers of the city states. It told rulers to choose a “realistic course of action”, to stay in power. Many of the rulers needed some guidance.
Art is an ideal way to express ideas and started to be brightened during this time. Many painters started to use lighter colors and paint more lively pictures. Back in the middle ages when pictures were painted of people they were painted in order of there status in the caste system. For example, the Pope would be in the direct center, but in this time it didn’t make any difference.
People at this time needed a change from the Medieval times. It was a cold dark time of fighting. Now that the Renaissance consisted of little to no feudalism and a brighter time it was perfect for a transition. It would be a very positive change that would cause many great things in the future!
