Flashing and spratting

Hi,
I've always wanted to get a replacement for the sub-par realone player and i've go it in the shape of pTunes. I've also acquired jackflash and jacksprat. Is it advisable to sprat realone and flash pTunes into rom? I've also got agendus. can i get rid of datebook and contacts and the likes? I know if I delete the wrong apps I'd end up with a paper-weight, so please advise..

I copied and pasted to notepad so I could refer as I wrote . . . . will try and not be my longwinded self, but your question CAN NOT be answered intelligently AND quickly. Good basic questions! Wish everyone asked them before "proceeding with the onslaught."

1. Have you USED JackSprat at all yet? If not, the first thing you'll want to do is MAKE A LIST, as you're doing (good lad!) of what you want to get rid of and what you want to keep. JackSprat, if you ask me, works best if you do "all the demolishing" in one sweep, take a breath and you're done with it. Re-using it and "adding more free space to the initialized flash" has caused me no problems, but can't be "guaranteed." More on the "app list" later. When you've decided,

2. Install both apps and register, MAKE backup to SD Card (easier and cleaner than desktop if you ask me) and uninstall the EXTRA LANGUAGES FIRST. After that, delete apps you don't want and RealOne is DEFINTELY deletable. You can MOST LIKELY put any player in its place using JackFlash. I would not NOT uninstall any core apps like contacts, datebook, to do - even if yo have Agendus. NO WAY. I got rid of Notepad because I use TealPaint, but I wouldn't recommend that because you don't "save" that much. You can dump older version of Kinoma (replace with newer version), Quicktour, SplashScreen (speeds up soft resets a lot!), Welcome & Calculator (provided you have a better one, which isn't hard). Since I don't use mine as a phone or for the web, I also deleted SMS, SMS support, VersaMail, Modem Support, Phone Link, Phone Support & Dialer. Also got rid of that awful "photos" thing that was bundled with my T3.

3. Then with JackFlash, INITIALIZE the flash. Immediately put JACK SAFE in flash.

4. Move apps out of RAM and into Flash one at a time. Multiples are allowed and probably fine, but I have never done more than 2-3 at a time. PLACE APPS IN FLASH in the ORDER they might be updated, as updating requires pulling them back into RAM, updating, and moving back to flash. Lots of this causes fragmentation - which is fine - JackFlash will "compact the flash" for you. I just don't like that happening more often than necessary. Freewares you love, for example, that are older "keepers" could go first. Apps that are check-mark enabled should be DISABLED before moving.

5. Agendus works great in flash for me, some have had problems. You may have to reset color preferences and icons "pre-assigned" to meeting and to do categories, and make sure you hit "apply" a couple of times. Sometimes they don't "stick" but will if done twice (usually not necessary). DO NOT MOVE ICONS TO FLASH or any Agendus databases - in fact, don't move ANY databases to flash -- they won't work. ONLY prc's should be moved.

Languages alone should give you around 4MB. With all the deletions I did (plus delete OLD Docs2Go an Docs2Go extras, and then reinstall ONLY Sheet to Go and needed libraries) I ended up with 10.5MB free. I'm running 50 apps and 5 libraries (libraries for reference only, like AES security/encrypt library, are okay in flash) and still have 2700k of flash left and 95% free of RAM on the T3.

As long as you INSTALLED JACKSAFE first off (you can't add later after adding apps - you have to "back them out," install JackSafe, and start over!) - you're protected from a HARD RESET. The apps in flash would come back.

Paul,
Thanks for the detailed explaination. But just before I set off on my 'journey', one more question. You mentioned not putting in any datebases? You mean even those rom bases also? I've got a 1.5mb Bible database and I was thinkin of putting it in. SO I can only put in the apps and not the databases? Thanks again.

Is it a fixed RESOURCE ONLY 1.5 MB library? If so, you could try. I'm not quite sure what you mean by a ROM base - 1) there's no "stock" bible database, and 2) if it WAS in ROM with no problems, why was it moved? I'd probably go with caution and say "I wouldn't."

A better way to handle that kind of thing is TealAlias. Create a folder on the SD Card I call "Aliases." MOVE, not copy, the prc to it. Move the library to same folder.

Open TealAlias and select the prc from that folder. Then select "all listed" and select the large library. Choose an icon.

From then on, tapping the icon

"*Bible" or whatever the app is, brings up the prc and the 1.5MB library, loads them both (quickly!) and away you go. It's temporarily in RAM. close it out and it's back on the card (actually it never left the card). The "Alias" itself is usually 2k-7k in size, and retains all saved and unsaved preferences because it was never DELETED - it was "moved" to the folder, remember? That way your registration stuff stays intact.

Personally I wouldn't tie up 1.5MB of flash with a "libary database," even if it would work. ANY DATABASE that iS changed OR ALTERED is not a candidate. And 1.5MB can put an awful lot of apps in instead. Do you normally have that database in RAM? Does it get ALTERED? This is the important question.

Some other apps you SHOULD NEVER PUT IN FLASH, by the way:

ClipPro
TealLock
TealMaster
TealLaunch
Teal Desktop Accessories
Hacks
Hack Managers (YAHM, TealMaster)
WordComplete

Other than that you're usually good to go; TealScript, FindHack, Agendus, AcidImage Pro, TealDoc, TealInfo, and many many others are just fine.

The 1.5MB thing's a teaser - I'd say if it's a resource only "library," TRY AND MOVE IT TO FLASH, and see if JackFlash gives you a warning message like it will with Contacts or Saved Preferences. If it doesn't, well that's up to you. I think TealAlias would handle it much better.

Hope this helped . . . I'm just not sure. I have put resource "library d/bs" required for an app in flash with no problems . . . . on the other hand . . . . aaaaargh!! Not sure.

As far as I remember, pTunes (version 3.06) crashes if installed in flash...
So be prepared to install other software in place of Realone!

Enjoy

Hi,
Yup, Rugby you're right, ptunes does crash in flash. Er, can I put most of Doc to go into flash? like sheet to go. word to go, slideshow to go. Oh ya, what about zlauncher? can it be in there too? Im still not too sure about flashing in a database. Paul would you please reaffirm that with me again? Well, worst come to worst, I'll just bite the bullet! Come what may! :D

T3Gunner,

I have Documents to Go (7.003) in Flash (most if not all files!) without any problems... As for Zlauncher, you will have to find someone else as I do not use it (sorry!).

Enjoy

Hi Rugby,
Thanks for the swift reply. Well, alright. Guess I'd have to try it out now.;) I'd reply again if it works. But so fat everything is working out just fine (fingers crossed). I've moved Nexus(my dict), my new kinoma player, ereader, and my entire bible (including the db). May I ask why the free flash in sprat is different from that shown in flash? Thanks again.

Hi,
Well. I can say im a happy fella now. :D Everything seems a success. I've imported Worldmate pro, Agendus pro, Nexus, the entire Docs to Go, my entire bible, Calc, Zlauncher, ereader, the latest kinoma player, world encyclopedia and Digime and Benchmark. I've freed up about 11mb of RAM. Thanks Paul and Rugby for your precious advice.

Glad it's a success story! I didn't see any smoke rising from your area, so . . . . .

DOESN'T IT ROCK WHEN IT ALL GOES WELL??

Man alive, I love JF/JS. Thinkg about all the space you've saved NOT ONLY in RAM, but on CardBackup files as well. If you had 2 of them, it's a total of 33MB.

Just too much to pass up - glad you did it and now just be careful of "flash compaction;" it is normally not a problem, but sometimes you'll have a "glitch." Delete the offending app, hotsync into RAM, and move to flash as a "fresh start."

Cheers.
