fixing rear drum brakes on 2002 Ford Windstar and I can't get the drum off, help?

I'm trying to get the drum removed but it keeps getting hung up on the brake shoes, how do I get it off. There has to be some trick to it.
 
If you are able to turn down the adjuster that is the best option. Otherwise beat around the drum with a decent sized hammer. The Drums probably have ridges of rust on the inside catching on the shoe linings. If all else fails a scewdriver between the backing plate and the drum prying and striking with a hammer on the opposite side of the drum works pretty well too.
