Fix my car or buy a new one?

I have a 95 Buick LeSabre with approximately 140000 miles on it. I believe the transmission is going on it but will find out for sure tomorrow. My question is, do I fix my car, which I know is essentially putting more money into it than it is worth, or do I buy a used car? I do not have the best credit and most likely will have to have a co-signer since I am 22 and have not established much of a credit history. I am looking at a 2003 Grand Prix GT with 31.000 miles on it listed for approximately $9,000 or a 2006 Cobalt with 23,000 miles on it for $10,000. So if I go for the used car which is a better deal?

I've heard good things about the Cobalt. If it listed at $10,000 then offer them $8,000.

If you are not rich, then by all means fix the buick and continue to drive it. The engine in that car will typically last about 300,000 miles, and the body is solid and easy to fix.

The Grand Prix has the same drive train as your Buick, so it's not a bad car, but you shouldn't ever spend $9000 that you don't have.
