Fishing Reel and Fishing Rods?

I am buying my husband a fishing reel and fishing rod for father's day. I have picked a 7 bearing Abu - Garcia Pro Max Bait-cast Reel - Gold/ Silver and would like to pair it up with a nice rod. I was looking at the 6.75' Ugly Stik Custom Spin Fishing Rod. Can I match the two together? Are they compatible, and do you have any better suggestions? Thanks!
thank you all for the input. :o)

I have selected the Abu Garcia and an ugly stick catfish casting rod. I hope that's right, and if not, it will give us a reason to buy a few more items. :o)
if this doesn't sound like a good combo... please send suggestions.

You will definitely want to look at a rod that has a "trigger"- a baitcasting reel should be matched with a trigger rod, rather than a spinning rod. Ugly Stiks are decent rods, and they generally last forever, but are a bit too flexible (soft) for most applications.

You would want a trigger rod since you have a casting reel. With a trigger rod the reel is seated on the top of the rod and it has a "trigger" looking piece just underneath. A 6 1/2 -7 foot medium or medium heavy action rod would be good. I know the reel you're speaking of and it's a good reel at a good price. I bought one from Walmart about two years ago and I love it. An Ugly Stik is a really good choice (not the absolute best but, really good) and it can be bought from Walmart as well. He'll have it for a long time too. Abu Garcia's are good reels and I like the one you've chosen. There are better rods than the Ugly Stik but, for the money you can't beat it. I would absolutely love to get a surprise like that from my wife for Father's Day!
