3 days of darkness and no food will drop all algae from system.
then limit light and no sunlight if it can be helped.
decrease food, remove dead plants fish etc.
algae is a plant and no food and light means the plant cells die.
i spend most my time trying to maintain green water not kill it but each to there own.
dont use that horrible algae cure as excess copper aint good for fish(neither are the ph swings)
good luck!

I have had my fishtank for 8 years with no problem water as always been very clear but in the last few weeks it as gone like green cloudy I have taken lots of water out and replaced but 2 days later its back , I have treated the water with Green Algae Control but its done nothing.

Eight years, and suddenly a problem?
Unless you have something dead in there, I would suspect a change in your source water. Cycles don't simply crash for no reason. Somehow, either nitrates, ammonia or phosphates are getting into your tank.

Test your source for those three.
Towns mess with their water all the time, and have the nerve to not tell us fishkeepers. If you are using town water, that would be my first guess at your culprit. Even bottled water is not safe from changes, so regardless of what you use for your source, I would test it (prior to adding any conditioner).

I used to get Culligan at the store; you know, the kind you pour into empty bottles? I needed R/O water for my SW tank. I started having algae problems, and it turned out that the Culligan water had nitrates in it. I called Culligan to report the problem, and they wanted to know what I was doing testing their water.

Go figure.

Anyway, I figure that if you've had a tank for 8 years, you know about testing your own water, etc, so that's why the source is what speaks to me as the most likely culprit.
I hope I've been helpful.

EDIT- The only other thing I can think of is if you recently upgraded your lighting.

try changing the sponges in your filter or if you got an external, then give it a good clean. i know they say it washes the bacteria away but it will do it more good than harm.
also get a pleck, they love the green stuff! they will keep a good control of whats growing. they are like lawnmowers but the underwater natural type!
if it continues then contact a aquatic place. you will find them in the yellow pages.

Have you put new plants in ?. This sometimes affects the water. Also check your filter and any ornaments that may appear to have large areas of algae on the surface.
