Fish growth that killed my molly?

I just had a fish that died last week. And I was wondering if someone could help me idetify what was wrong with it. You see, It had a very large growth on his tail that has increased in size over the past few months. It sort of looks like a pimple in shape with a bumpy texture (like when you get bumps on your tounge). Any ideas? I know it didn't bother him until the very last day. Then he would go to a secluded area of the tank and lay down.

That could have been any number of things, including abscess or tumour, both of which can kill the fish slowly.
