Hello there,
I own a koi pond but due to winter, I've brought some of my prized koi inside so they can grow. (They are subjects in my paintings.)
Here are the tank specs:
Size - 55 gallons (Long and short)
Filter - (2) 50 gallon waterfall filters Marineland
Air supply - Waterfalls and a strip air bubbler in the center of tank
Fish - (3) 8 inch koi, (3) 5 inch Fancy goldfish, and a smaller 4 inch koi
Now I've had this tank up and running with the goldfish and smaller koi for a few months with no problem. I put in the bigger koi a few weeks ago.
Today, I bought a beautiful Shiro Utsuri (about 8 inches). I put him in the tank with the others, he is currently still fine and healthy. The issue is the other fish.
One of the goldfish, a Ryukin, suddenly started doing backflips after about 10 minutes of the new koi being in the tank. That goldfish, now appears to have issues with his swim bladder, and can't keep balance. He is swimming fine, just all over the place and half the time upside down.
I figured stress of a new fish, maybe set him off, even though many koi who were heading into the pond were put in the tank before hand to be quarintined. Any advice on how to help him out?
The other issue is two of the other koi are showing "spawning season" symptoms. The male is chasing the females around the tank and pushing them with his nose against the walls.
The new fish itself appears fine, and is quite calm. I wonder if he is carrying something to set them all off.
Any advice would be nice. On another thing, my tank has always read 5.2PH and 0.00 Ammonia levels, but lately the ammonia level has risen to 0.03 and I can't appear to lower it. Any advice on that.
I am aware of how much koi can grow, these four larger ones are only in the tank for 3-4 monthes before being moved back into our 13,000 gallon pond. (They need to be at least 10 inches, before I put them in the pond since most of our koi are between 25 and 40 inches in length.)
