I liked the selection in Walter Kovacs,Rorschach and Jason Bourne. two great very strong action icons.

Royal Tenenbaum, the Dude, and Rorschach are three of my favorite movie characters of all time.

This is a cool idea, more people should share their favorite characters.

34. The Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenneger)

For Schwarzenegger, T2 is really the role of his life. The way he acts in this movie is just unbelievable. Best performance of his carreer.

"What's wrong with your eyes?"

33. James Bond (Sean Connery)

My favorite Bond of all time, Sean Connery is a class act.

32. Charlie Kelly (Charlie Day)

I am not featuring many TV show characters on here, probably only two more later on down the list - so it goes to show how much I love It's Always Sunny and Charlie in particular.

31. Vincenzo Coccotti (Christopher Walken)

"Now, what we got here is a little game of show and tell. You don't wanna show me nothing but you're telling me everything."

30. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.)

I still think of the Iron Man films as a summer blockbuster, but Tony Stark as a character is brilliant to me. He is completely hilarious, witty, and resourceful and is far more interesting to me than "Iron Man".

Pratt: Is it true that you went twelve-for-twelve with the Maxim Girls last year?
Tony Stark: That is an excellent question. Yes and no. March and I had a scheduling conflict but fortunately the Christmas cover was twins.

Uhhmmm.... Bill the Butcher with his butcher knives vs. Daniel Plainview with his bowling pin?.... I gotta go with Bill Cutting.

These two performances are actually very similar, but I think his character in There Will Be Blood was better.

The addition of Charlie is genius, one of my favourite shows, the ranting and shouting between the gang is hilarious. I love how Charlie adopts a certain character in some episodes, like when he thinks he's Serpico and when he believes he's a knowledgable lawyer.

+ rep for all of those posts. I already mentioned in your top 100 that we have very similar taste in films; this also appears to be the case with characters. I especially like Bond (although - don't shoot me - I believe Daniel Craig to be equally good as Connery), The Dude, Quint and Nick Naylor (I still think Thank You For Smoking is by far Reitman's best film).

Very nice start to this list and I'm looking forward to your other choices.

I really enjoy Daniel Craig as James Bond, too!

Thanks everyone, I look forward to others making a characters list as well - this is fun

9. Larry David (Himself)

God, what can I say about Curb Your Enthusiasm? This is the perfect sitcom, and Larry David is a comedic genius. Mr. David admits that not every great actor can be given an idea and asked to improvise a situation in front of the camera, but CYE and Larry gather the best of them and execute it flawlessly!

"Pretty. Prettttyyy...Pretty Prettty Good"

8. Jake LaMotta (Robert De Niro)

"There's no way I'm goin' down. I don't go down for nobody."

7. Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford)

"You want to talk to God? Let's go see him together, I've got nothing better to do."

6.John Malkovich (Himself)

"This portal is mine and must be sealed up forever. For the love of God."

5. Frank TJ Mackey (Tom Cruise)

4. Randle Patrick McMurphy (Jack Nicholson)

3. Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant)

You don't understand how tempted I am to put Raylan Givens at number 1. It just wouldn't be fair, Justified is only one season deep - but I have watched it over and over again already. I absolutely loved the show, I should also have the character Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins), but I can get my Justified fix on the list by just adding Timothy Olyphant's excellently acted Raylan Givens here at number 3.

2. Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis)

1. Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro)

The end.

Fine list. Very fine job. Can't say I'd change much knowing what I "know about" characters. They "ought" to be a little bit quirky and flamboyant, I feel.

P. S. P. T. Anderson sure writes some great characters.

Your list is awesome. I'd do my own, but it would have at least half of the people on yours, so I'm not sure people would care. My favorites from your list in no particular order:

The Dude--should have been higher
Travis Bickle--my same number one

The Joker
Frank T.J. Mackey
Daniel Plainview/Bill the Butcher Cutting
Jakes Gittes
Jake LaMotta
Indiana Jones
Dirk Diggler

So glad you chose Marge Gunderson. If I was to make a list like this she'd be in my top 5

29. Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson)

"You're dumber than you think I think you are."

28.Dr. Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd)

"If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits eighty-eight miles per hour... you're gonna see some serious sh*t."

27. Keyser Soze (Kevin Spacey)

"The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist"

26. Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci)

"Sure, mom, I settle down with a nice girl every night, then I'm free the next morning. "

25. Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks)

"My momma always said, "Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get."
