First to RECIEVE a T5 - Post Here

Very interesting points. P1 says mine should ship out this week. I'm hoping for the best. I'd consider sending it back...but I really need a Palm and I like the T5 in theory. If it really is terrible...we'll call palmOne and talk it over with them. I'm seriously crossing the fingers that maybe I'll get "lucky" and get one that's not a lemon. Or, maybe in this case a lemon is one that actually works!! We'll see.

On another side note guys, let's keep the language down a bit, ok? I don't remember if it says anything about that in the board guidelines, but I'm sure it offends some of us. We'd just appreciate it if everyone would tone it down a bit. Thanks!

Matthew,

I believe that you'll give the T5 the thorough once over and provide us with some unbiased views.....

The more I think about it the more I believe that PalmOne has got to release another device soon. The T5 with it's known calendar bug and some other apparent issues - well we need a thorough review that tells it like it is.

The lack of a voice record feature - that's another step backwards in my mind.

The plastic case is also a step backwards compared to the T3.

If P1 would have released the T5 as a T3 alternative and then come out with a T6 Top of the Line unit then it might make sense to me.

I'm a die hard Palm Fan that may be defecting to something else because I just really believe that since we don't have some other "killer" device that had all of the features of the T3 and then some....

Please provide a realistic review of your T5 when it arrives so that we can all either be floored or bored.

Does the T5 even have a mic? I can't even imagine a handheld not coming equipped with one. (Well, there's all those pre-tungsten models, but who's counting?) I was definitely elated at first with the T5, but it's looking less rosy by the day. I think I'm having trouble finding another person who bought one and didn't already cancel their order. Would a T6 be in the wings? Could it??? I really hope not. Especially since the T5 is $400. What would the T6 be? $700??? That's definitely out of the price range. It could be the classic m515 scenario that was really really unfair, but who really knows. Google has yielded no results on this.

I'm hoping the P1 will release a Cobalt upgrade for those with T5s. The price would hopefully be free, since it should be out sometime early next year. If the T5 were somehow equipped with a hidden microphone, perhaps it would restore the Voice Recorder. It'd be nice if we had a millionaire somewhere around here that could buy one to just take apart and look at. Perhaps Peter's Pilot Pages (http://www.pspilot.de/) will take one and find out what makes it tick. I'd soooo love to know.

Again, when I called P1 Friday, they said it should ship out this week, so I hope to have it soon. I had to get rid of overnight shipping when I did the IBM Partner price deal. Too bad (although it'l end up costing me only $370 or something when it's all said and done).

Got the fingers crossed everyone. Something a friend of mine told me: "Machines are like women. Either nobody can figure them out, or they're cantankerous." I guess that's true of companies named "palmOne" too.

If P1 doesn't have something else in the wings of the Treo 650 (which is itself getting bad press because of issues of software programming) in the form of another handheld then I think P1 has set itself on a course of being a converged Phone manufacturer and not a handheld manufacturer.

The gals at The Gadgeteer have reviewed the iPAQ 4700 and have pretty much endorsed it over their previous devices. The only real negative was the touchpad and price of $649.

The Dell X50V is only $499 and has nearly all of the same features. Ok, so you can by the T5 for $399 and save $100 bucks but then you don't get Wifi or CF slot.

The more I think about the CF slot, I can use it in conjunction with my Canon D60 camera and finalize the pictures on it's CF card while travelling or otherwise and still be able to email via my new laptop which is due in January with wifi builtin.

Matthew, I await your review in a "hope" that there is something that will knock the socks off of my thinking of switching to PPC. But based upon the early tainted reviews.....it may be difficult to sway my leaning.

I read in the PalmInfoCenter review linked from here that it doesn't have a mic.

Since overhere the products arrive (a lot) later from their release date, I own a TT purchased NEW less than a year ago. And, although it is a bit less reliable than my previous m515, it just works very very fine.

But, as a human being, I want something new for now, something better. And they at P1 do know this, for, which other reason could be there to span the release of new devices by one year in between? So, I think, they aimed the T5 to current high end owners. And it is very bad that we are not finding it appealing or even a product good enough to satisfy our desires. I know you all, like me, where eagerly waiting for its release quite for the same reason.

And, worst of all, PocketPC devices, as appealing as they are hardware-wise, carry the burden of the pains and all those Windows glitches we know fairly well, no matter those could have become a thing of the past nowadays. Jumping onto that train is almost a faith feat of a Palm loyal who feels there is nothing left to lose.

I feel worried.

Yes Prevost...That would be my general consensus as well.

I had some dreams about the fabled T4 (which turned out to be the T5) and those dreams weren't assimilated into the device. But I'm settling for what they DID give me, and that was an upgrade from my all-but-dead m505.

Another solution to all our problems!! (Insert "devil" emoticon here). I simply need to take over palmOne from here on out. Make all the decisions and we'd have perfect devices, since I listen to all the great people at PalmBlvd! Eh, the other solution (which is really the only possible one at this point) is to put Jeff Hawkins back in the driver's seat there at P1. Now HE did a good job. Thanks Jeff for my PalmPilot Personal! Who knows, I could buy a replacement screen for it and go back to PalmOS 2.3. Now that's a good idea!

Terrible...terrible. I'll just cross my fingers and pray. It had better get here no later than Monday, or I'm going to be hopping mad. Hey, we could all mount a hostile takeover against the Postal Service.

All I had to do was walk into my local Comp USA and buy one. Here in Michigan they've had them at Comp USA and Office Depot for a few days.

I really like it - but I get an error message at the end of each hot sync. The hot sync seems to work, and when I reset everything is there - still, I'd like to not have to reset after every sync.

Out of the box, it wouldn't hot sync at all, but had a fatal error message. As soon as I uninstalled my old Sony Clie desktop from my PC, I was able to sync with the T5. This obviously meant that the info from the Clie didn't transfer to the T5, however I've had no problem beaming between the 2 and transferring applications and data.

My overall opinion - I love it. I had heard that the display wasn't as bright as some on the market. It's brighter than that on my Clie, and that's saying something. I bought a 1G SD card, but haven't used it yet. Have put some photos on, and they look beautiful.

Quite a bit small than my Clie (NX80V), which is one of the reasons I bought it. So there you go - my initial experience with the new T5.

Well, there's another fairly happy user with a T5. I'm surprised you could get one from retail. I would be very suspicious about pre-production models and such, but hey...if it works, it works!

After not getting my T5 today(Friday), I called up P1 again to check their inquiry. It's moved from Ohio to Charlotte, NC, and they said it was probably even in Raleigh already. According to this information, when the mail truck comes at around 12:30PM tomorrow, I should have a brand-new T5 at my door. I hope Murphy's law doesn't apply this time. I've had a bad enough week already.

Those still waiting on my review...patience. :D

Why do we have two threads on the same topic, and none of them is closed?

I suggest to close one of them if they are actually going on the same thing as their title subject implies.

Well, to Hotsync without soft reseting afterwards is the way it MUST be. This is Palm, remember?

Just for this I wouldn't feel satisfied at all.

I guess I'll upgrade my PC first and, if for that date T5 bugs are ironed out, I'll probably buy one, but not before that...or not at all if I buy a Loox or an Asus or an X50V before.

Which thread? The first T5 thread is locked. The other thread is general T5 stuff and the second is for people who have gotten a T5. I don't see a problem.

Now that I've had the T5 for a couple of days, I'm really happy with it. Yes, I still have to reset after syncing. Never lose any data though.

Today I used the Real Player for Palm that comes on the software and put a couple of CDs on an SD card to use in the T5. Sounds great - of course the sound is all in the headphones, but the process was simple and straightforward and I'm glad I got the 1G SD card (on sale at Comp USA $69 after rebate).

I'm waiting to hear what others think when they get their units. They're flying off the shelves here (Grand Rapids MI). The stores that have them can't keep them in stock. They've told me so far no returns.

Now I need a good case and a keyboard. It's always something :)

I use Datebook 5, and I've had one crash when opening up a different split screen. After reset I was able to do the same thing without a glitch. All told, I've had about one crash a day. I've read reports that say nothing about crashes or resets. Maybe I should wait til after Nov 5 and return for a new unit. Meanwhile, I'll live with the once a day reset.

The programs I've installed on it are:

Datebook 5
Lifebalance
Splashshopper
NIV Study Bible
Bejeweled
my own photos and mp3s
Silver Screen (which I ended up not using because I like the built-in better)

I like their built in Calendar view, so I keep that as my default when turning on, and DB5 is at the top of my faves, so it's easy to switch to that for more detail.

OTOH, my husband is a died-in-the-wool PPC user, and thinks he couldn't live without it. His latest, Dell AX30 will be here next week (ordered over a week ago - why so long to ship???). I've owned both and am much happier with PalmOS.

Denise

One crash daily is, I guess, worse than any PPC...

In fact I support Palm, too, but that instability is insane for all people accustomed to Palm OS reliability. If people is going to find PPC more stable than Palm  after the T5, I don't know what they at Palm One/Source are thinking. But I will be one of those moving on.

You're right where I'll be, frankly, when we reach the point where OS6 is "all there is." I've posted often here about my "jumping on OS5" last January and at least keeping the majority of my apps working . . .

now with the "new OS5 version," even THAT isn't possible. I'm so glad I got the T3 when I did and didn't wait; I'm picking up a SECOND/SPARE T3 next week, will "clone" mine and be done with it for a "while."

After that, I'm afraid I'll be looking real hard at DLR's husband's choice - The X30 - as the best PPC right now (I'm sure there'll be a new "JX-9 million" PPC out by next Spring).

No matter what PPCs hold in terms of "new challenges," I can't for the life of me see how anyone would "live" with a "now required" POST HOTSYNC RESET!!

There comes a point where "enough's enough." I'm afraid P1 have now reached that "well I guess we'll just go out and get some drapes we hate, too" stage, and unless they're absolutely "dazzling" with OS6 and RETROACTIVE software compatibility, I'm with you Prevost . . . . it's Dell Axim X30 time. Screw it; I'll find a launcher and new apps and "get used to it," like the drapes! The 2nd T3 will forestall that for me quite a while; you might give at least a little thought, Prevost, to a "Paul-ized T3." Otherwise, you're right . . . PPC. I'm sorry you had the trouble.

Paul,

If you're not amember of the DateBk5 group at http://www.egroups.com/messages/pimlicodatebk/ , you should join so you can see what CESD, the creator of DateBk5 has to say about the T5 and OS 5.4. I have a lot of respect for CESD, both for his programming abilities and his candor. His evaluation of the T5 and particularly the progamming behind OS 5.4 is both blunt and disconcerting. It appears that P1 really rushed the T5 and OS 5.4 into produciton and there are significant bugs in the OS, not just the ones that have been discovered so far. I'm not ready to jump ship to a PPC, mainly becuase DateBk5 runs my life, but I certainly won't be the first in line to spend $400 on a T5. :(
