First tentative shots of new CGI Smurfs

Well, at least it looks like the Smurfs, thus appealing to it's nostalgic-loving fans. And,thus, making it more promising than the wretched Alvin and the Chipmunks.

I hated the idea of how the Chipmunks looked at first, myself. But then again, looking at half the original albums, especially ones before The Alvin Show in 1961, they were basically intended to really be chipmunks, not anthropomorphic. Though, the only televised appearance of the Chipmunks in that state was a Ed Sullivan appearance with puppet chipmunks.

I felt that movie much, much better than how they depicted it in the previews. It wasn't great, but it was far from terrible. In time, maybe I'll loosen up adn check out underdog, though Chipmunks was under the blessing of Ross Jr, while Joe Harris was upset at Disney for that film.

Anyway, it still makes me wonder. Will this be a reimagined project based closer to the comics, like the other Smurf film (which didn't do too well over here) or will it be a remake of the series?

I agree. Next thing you know they'll do a sequel to The Spongebob Squarepants Movie in CGI. Does anyone believe that CGI would make it funnier? One of the reasons the first film was so freaking great was the terrifically-timed animated gags and masterful comic drawing. CGI still can't compete with that.

Hmmm... if this movie was made outside of the US market, no doubt they'd look at Xiliam and do just that. While I can't defend the use of CGI, I can't condemn it either...

But unfortunately it wasn't successful. They made it completely different from the US cartoon, as it was a European project, and quite a few Smurf fans were confused by it. The voices, the absense of Smurfette and more notible Smurfs... all pretty much kept it from being a hit in the states. Though, I do say the fact they made it their way, refusing to make it a clone of the US series was one of the reasons it was a great film.

Personally, I'd love to see a Roger Rabbit style Animated Smurfs, live action Gargamel type deal. But that ain't gona happen.

But I'm glad they look like Smurfs, here. I had a huge fear they'd try to humanize them, and make them more realistic.
