First Smartphone

My wife currently has a Motorola Razr. She wants a new phone as her battery is shot. She's really wanting something she can check facebook and take pictures etc on.

She's ready to move to the smartphone world. At one point she had a blackberry pearl and hated it. I need something with a good UI and we are hoping to spend less than $100 on the device.

We are with ATT and are contract is up.

We have been looking at the HTC ARIA as it's cheaper at Best Buy than ATT and meets our budget.

The only thing we don't like is that they force you to get the $15 per month data plan.

She tells me she really doesn't need to be always connected. She is fine with having Wifi accessing, so she can upload photos to facebook etc.

Her care has GPS, so that is a non issue and most of the time we are together and I have an Iphone4 provided by work.

We have a used/refurb phone store in town I was going to checkout. Any thoughts on a good phone to avoid the data plan?

Thanks

AT&T requires a data plan on any smartphone and will add it if you don't get one or drop it afterward. Verizon has a similar policy and I think Sprint does as well. Not sure about T-Mo. They all use random and periodic IMEI/ESN scans of the devices on their network to make the determination.

I went to that store and they told me that...I noticed they only have a few basic phones left. It kind of looks like they will one day do away with them..forcing the data plan on everyone...hmmm we just figured out a way to raise rates without technically raising them...sigh.

Anyways, with that being told I told me wife we might as well get a new phone from Best Buy or ATT. Friday we're going to go look at some. She likes the look or the ARIA. The IPhone4 would be nice since I have one and we use ITunes for music. But, she thinks it too heavy. She's a small girl.

Any others we should look at?
