First Smartphone: N1 or Samsung Galaxy S (or other recommendation)

I'm planning on getting my first smartphone, and having seen the direction Apple is taking with their platform, I want to get an Android phone.

I'm in Canada, and would be sticking to Bell's network. I would probably root the phone within a week of getting it.

The two phones that caught my attention were the Samsung Galaxy S and the HTC Nexus One. Most of the discussions I've found re: the two phones has been oriented towards people who already own an N1 and are debating upgrading.

They both cost about the same, and the Galaxy S has stronger hardware, but I'm worried about Samsung's update support. I know they're coming out with their Froyo update soon, but when 2.3 comes out, I probably won't want to wait months for the update. Whereas the N1, as a dev phone, will be getting that update right away..

My question is, if I wanted to ditch the Samsung touchwiz interface and go to a standard android install, would every component in the phone be functional? What is the mod community support for the Galaxy S like?

Why would you want to ditch TouchWiz? It's almost identical to the standard android UI other than it makes better use of the screen area at the bottom of the screen.

About the only way left to get a N1, with the exception of used phones, is to pay google a $25.00 developers fee and then $529.00 for the phone. I think Samsung S makes a cheaper choice.
