First Service at Dealer Required

Do it yourself so you know it was done. Lots of tales of folks finding out the dealers half-ass it, and do not follow the shop manual. Has nothing to do with the warranty.
 
The dealer only saw mine once for the 1K service.Another one that slipped thru the critical or any fastner check.Cost me $390!
Since then I have done my own services,53000miles on the clock.
 
doing your own service allows you the opportunity to see what's on the magnetic drain plugs, and get to know your bike. if the service they are recommending is free, then go for it, otherwise, get the required "O" rings and oil filter and do it yourself.
 
32 yr Ive never had my bike to the dealer for a oil change...Do it yourself and as said..Keep the sale receipts and document the miles......
 
It's up to you. Not having it done by the dealer will not affect your warranty. When finalizing your purchase, tell them it's a deal " if " you throw in the 1000 mile service for free. Most dealers will go for it.
 
Like everything else in this country...you get what you pay for. Sometimes you'll get a good tech and sometimes you might not. No matter what they are going to charge you between $250-$450...for what???? Its a total scam IMO. Now if you have waranty work that's another thing. Dealers make their money on selling clothing and accessories and doing service work (FACT).
 
It a personal choice but I would recommend that anyone let the dealer do the first 1000 mile service. They are more likely to find something that the factory may have missed. Especially if the new bike owner is not familiar with all of the service inspection procedures and process.

If you're an experience Harley wrench, go for it and do it yourself.

I just had the Ultra Limited 1K service completed at the dealership yesterday just because I wanted the peace of mind that there was a qualified technician who pulled the first service. Lots of "adjustments" are on the 1K service schedule and I think trained eyes are needed for those.

The service cost me $350 (should have thrown that into the deal ) but I did get a free bike wash and full bag of gas as part of the service.
 
Until I bought my new RK I had ridden 33 years and have never been to a dealer or even an indy for any kind of service. When I bought the RK in '08 I took it in for the 1,000 mile service. When I went to pick the bike up the front fender was tweaked to one side and there was a chip in the paint on the rear fender behind the bags. Sure, they made it right, but that was the last time at the dealer for me ............
