The point of animation is to breath life into something that otherwise isn't alive. Essentially, to be able to take what is in your mind - and be able to make your own living world out of it.
I hardly see how making it ultra-realistic is 'missing the point'. It'd be like telling a painter to stop painting realistic portraits because the camera is invented and you could use real people.
I personally think the work presented in this trailer is astounding. Who cares if it's real people or not? As an animation fan, and someone who is interested in the creation of digital animation - the film looks fascinating and beautiful. Miles ahead of The Polar Express, which I personally thought was good on it's own merits.
