First "Cool" phone is the W800 what I want

Ok so I'm a total newbie so please be gentile. I had only 2 phones in the past and they were very very basic phones. Black and gray screen. Service was fine but they didn't 'do' anything.

So I am looking to get a cool phone. Early in the hunt I heard about the Sony Ericsson W800 and fell in love. Love the looks. From what I understand this phone will do what I want but I just wanted to check and see if I'm correct and if there was another phone that someone thought would be better or just as good for what I want.

I live in Virginia, USA. So most likely I will be buying an unlocked phone off of Ebay or somewhere. My plan with Alltel is up in 2 months at which time I'll probably be switching to Cingular. I'm hoping I can expect the reception with this phone to be ok.

I love the MP3 aspect but I want to transfer and watch video on the phone. This is a big one for me. I get a lot of tv shows on the computer. Avi and mpegs mostly. Can I transfer these onto and watch them on the phone? I'm guessing that I will have to convert them somehow but I don't have a problem with that aspect as I usually convert them to DVD format and make DVDs of them. I want to upgrade to the 2g memory stick so I'm hoping to have some mp3s along with 2-3 tv shows to watch. Is this possible.

Hope I didn't drone on too much but I wanted to explain what I wanted.

Any help or advice is appreciated.

Thank you

If you would like to watch videos I wouldn't recommend the w800i even though its a superb phone. Screen is just too small and viewing videos on it is probably not that good. I will go for the Sony Ericsson w900i. Has a great 2.2inch screen( very big for phones nowdays) and it has a great graphic card (GeForce Graphic Card) so Ive heard. So yea if you really into movies and videos clips then I recommend the w900i.

cellphones are cellphones first, so if you are gonna go with what a2kt1c's recommendation, you better check that you get gsm 1900 around your area, or else you'll just be carrying a really cool looking phone(seriously awesome, got to play with one this weekend) that doesn't work around your area. Best bet for best service would be T-mobile, but I don't know how the market is around your area.

Hmm. Ok thanks. The 900 is a bit out of my price range, plus I'm not keen on the swivel. Maybe I'll just get a portable media player and a much cheaper phone. I really love that W800 though.

Yea I agree the w800i is a superb phone but not really ideal for videos. If videos not really big deal for you then it will fit you really well. Has a great CAM and a GREAT Mp3 Player.

Ok but does it play videos at all? I know it doesn't have a huge screen and maybe isn't as good as an ipod video but enough that I could watch an episode of Lost while I ride the stationary bike at the gym. Something fun not great but fun.

OK. Well this does help make some decisions. I may go with a lower priced backup phone and wait for the W900 to drop in price and then pick it up. Just not real crazy about that swivel but I do like the larger screen. Thank you for the help.

Someone help the lad out and show him a picture of the quality. I'm also looking at the W800, it would be interesting to see the video quality.

If you want a phone to watch shows, I would recommend the nokia 6682, or any symbian os one for that matter. pretty much any of these. But just because of smart movie. site . I use it with my 6260 and it's great. Also, the 6682 is great for mp3's as well, according to reviews, not sure in comparison tho. And all the programs will keep u entertained. 'sides in my opinion the two phones look a lot alike.

Nokia 6270 for you guys in the US is great.... good for videos... will do full screen no problem, has miniSD card slot (biggest cards are 2GB currently)

I believe it's quad band as well.... so it has 850MHz too.

yep, i've used the 6270, great phone. Except for the fact NONE of the videos i converted worked. Apparently its not uncommon either.

On the other hand, if you're interested in the 6270, you could try the D600.
Videos look and record great.
