First car: Jeep or Prius?

I'm a 16 year old, turning 17 in 6 weeks.

Then, I will have my license and am going to get a car. My options:

Dad's old 2005 Toyota Prius
-42 mpg
-squish-able

Traded in for 2004 Jeep GC
-17 mpg :(
-SUV's are safer in crashes (by no means am I reckless, but I can't sit here and claim that $h** doesn't happen..)
-winter driving (I'm in the northeast and school is 15 miles away through Dec., Jan., and Feb.)

I'm paying for gas so that's where the Prius has an obvious advantage! On the other hand, I do feel much safer in a truck like the Grand Cherokee.

I was considering like picking up the Jeep then going through the winter for a year or so and if the gas REALLY catches up to me I could swap it back out for the used Prius then.

What do you guys think?

the prius. definitely.

i have a prius, it's a great car. it is fuel efficient and good for the environment. when a car does not get good mileage, it is not good for the environment. the prius is actually pretty safe as that kind of car goes too though. i don't think it is worth it to get the jeep for that reason alone; also, SUVs can be top heavy

Jeep
Who wants to show up to high school in a toyota prius?

If anything, contribute to the economy by driving a american car.

A jeep will give you the complete driving experience.

A prius will give you the same driving eperiance as a skateboard.

If you go with the jeep you will learn how to work on a car by yourself.

If you get the prius I wish you luck trying to figure out how to put oil inside the engin or replaceing any part of the system.

If you get the jeep you will have no problen navigating through winter roads. (also the jeep is high enough of the ground to clear high snow.)

If you get the prius I can almost be cirtain you will be stuck at the bottoms of hills watching 4X4 SUV's and trucks speeding by effortlessly.

By the way after a few years of owning a prius there will come a time where you will have to replace the vehical battery. (its not going to be cheep).

Its your choice
Best of luck
