First Anime

Uuuggghhh I used to watch something waaaay back in the late 80's but I can't remeraber what it was exactly, just that it came on either just before, or just after Thundercats... or maybe it took over the time slot, I don't remeraber - I was like 5. It was sci-fi, and all I can really remeraber is giggling over some sort of club scene full of aliens because it was not unlike the Mos Eisley Cantina scene in Star Wars (my geekitude goes waaaaaaaaaaay back. XD)

As for anime I can clearly remeraber; Little Nemo. It always fascinated me although I didn't know it was animoo at the time (or WinRABor Mckay! )

As for anime I actually paid attention to *drumroll please* Outlaw Star! Ah, Toonami Midnight run. Good times, good times. Do I still enjoy it? I never got to finish the series and keep meaning to watch it all so... I'll get back to ya. XD

Don't judge me, it was the early 90's and I was young

Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend

good 'ol tentacle action. I'd watch again for nostalgia

Followed soon by Akira, Battle Angel Alita, Black Magic M-66, Record of the Loddos Wars.

It should be noted I didn't search any of this out myself, all stuff shown to me by new frienRAB. All Good stuff but I didn't really start looking for anime myself until first seeing Ranma 1/2 and then Tenchi Muyo.

Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball. They were both syndicated and on in the mornings. I didn't really like either of them.

When UPN had their little anime block and introduced me to Teknoman (now known as Tekkaman Blade) I was set for life.

Thinking about it, I did see clips of Yu-Gi-Oh, Beyblade, Fruits Basket and quite a few others before I knew what anime was :/

I am still going to say that Princess Mononoke is the most important anime to me.

My first taste of anime may have been two rather obscure Tatsunoko shows featuring animal characters.
One starred a hippo and a penguin (Kabatto) and another one was about the mis-adventures of a talking dinosaur that diagnoses medical problems (Kaiketsu Tamagon) who sounded a lot like Ed Wynn.

They were pretty wacky, surreal, and kind of disturbing. Kind of like Tex Avery, only with trippy limited animation. They were dubbed into English and shown in segments on the hour-long Mad Scientist Toon Club.
The show itself that hosted these anime segments was kind of like a cross between "Bill Nye the Science Guy" and "Beakman's World", only more bearable than the latter.
It was produced by Saban. It used to air very early on Saturday mornings on WABC-7 in New York around 1992, right before the national ABC feed of Saturday morning cartoons came on.

Some other early anime experiences I had were:
Ronin Warriors
Celebrity Home Video anime
Samurai Pizza Cats
Grimm's Fairy Tales

I don't remeraber but it's either Voltron or Pokemon. However it was not till 2003 that i got interested in Pokemon, so that was the first anime I really got into. The most important anime to me though is Dragonball GT, as it got me interested in a lot more anime including the first two Dragonball series.

I watched Pokemon every now and then when I was little, but the first one I really got into and sparked my interest in anime was Death Note. My friend wouldn't stop talking about it for days, and he forced me to watch it one Saturday on Adult Swim.

And now, I'm immersed in the anime world.

If it counts, then I'd have to say Transformers: The Movie.

Of course, as that was a Japanese animated American film (Like GI Joe's first movie). I'd have to say either Sailor Moon, Pokemon or Digimon got me into the anime person I am today.

Ranma 1/2 was my first anime, long ago in the 90's before i even knew anime existed and i was a kid i was at blockbuster, my mom took me there to rent a movie, but i wanted to see cartoons, anyway, the art for Ranma 1/2 (they had a lot of it on VHS) looked cool so i just grabed a random one, i was instantly hooked, after that i pretty much saw all the episodes they had in that blockbuster..... COMPLETELY OUT OF ORDER, i dint care, it was all awesome.

The first anime that I really remeraber watching was My Neigrabroador Totoro. I was real young though so I didn't remeraber much of it but I still recall renting it at a video store. I give Pokemon the credit to me starting to getting into anime and Digimon for keeping me around.

First one I ever saw was either Samurai Pizza Cats, The Nozzles, Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics, or the first, old dub of Dragonball. Not sure which aired first/I saw first.

First one I ever saw where I knew it was Japanese was Sailor Moon. I don't think I'd enjoy it much these days, maybe for nostalgia if I watched the dub, though.

Pokemon, then Yu-Gi-Oh.

But what really got me into anime was InuYasha.

Also, I didn't really know what anime was when I watched Pokemon. :P

The farthest memory I have from anime around 1992.. I recall watching the spanish dub of Candy Candy.

Later on.. I recall G-Force(Gatchaman.) Snoozles, Button Nose, Teknoman(Tekkaman Blade.)

Wow most of the people in this topic are pretty young if their first anime was Pok

Like many, DBZ was my first anime. I started watching it on Toonami back in 2002 during the Other World Tournament episodes. But my best friend had been watching it longer than I had, so she'd turn it on while I was at her house, which was my first exposure to Future Trunks... my first fangirl obsession. So, DBZ was my gateway into anime and into fangirling

I think the very first thing I ever saw was project A-KO.

Now, it's been a long time since then and seeing this thread I figured I'd rewatch it, thinking it couldn't possibly be as good as I remeraber it being, but on a second viewing, it's actually better, cause of course I did know all the anime stuff it was refrencing.

I think they actually might have managed to refrence in some form every single piece of popular anime ever made in that movie up to the point it was made, and it's only about an hour and change long.

The way it moves seemlessly from a post appocalyptic setting to a slice of life/lesbian school girl dramady to a mecha to an alien invasion to Macross to Captain harlock is just friggin hilarious. Oh, with lots of panty shots thrown in because, hey, it's japan.

I think I know why I didn't care much for Gurren Lagaan now, cause I'd seen A-KO already and it just does it way way better.

Doraemon was the first anime I've ever watched, back in the early 90's when I lived in Indonesia.

And if it wasn't that, it was Maya the Bee, when it aired on Nick Jr.
