Firewall woes

I have read the FAQ on firewalls, but was unable to find any solutions to my problems. When I add gnutellahosts.com:6346
in the field adjacent to the Add Remove buttons in my Gnutella client, it flashes in the above list for about half a second and then disappears. I suspect this is a firewall issue. How can I attempt to get around this for incoming files only?
 
That's what it's supposed to do. It connects to gnutellahosts.com:6346, downloads a list of hosts, and then disconnects.

Which client are you using?
 
get bearshare.. this client is perfect.. just make sure to keep checking back .. its new software and there's bound to be bug fixes ... but i have run it all night and it diddnt crash.. its great. it even tells you where connections hail from.. i had one from japan.. and it showed a little picture of a japaneese flag. it has more features than any other gnutella client.

but about the firewall problem.. im not sure.. but mabey you should try changing your port?
 
Thanks for the help. However, when I see the connection flash in the top box, it doesn't seem to have long enough to download anything before it disappears. After it has gone, all of my lists remain empty... ANy other ideas?
 
I have tried Gnutella and the latest BearShare client. I have the same problem with both clients although Bearshare gives me more hope when I try different ports.
If I use gnutellahosts.com I get connection refused within two seconds. If I use gnet.ath.cx it counts down from 11 to 1 and times out. I have tried adding different ports to these addresses, such as 8080, 1080, 80, 443. Can anyone think of anything else I can try?
 
I'm behind a firewall using Mactella v 1.0.1. I can connect to the Gnutella network and search, But when I select a file to download, it won't download. I have arrows spinning with "connected" showing, and I can also see a large list of hosts, but nothing else happens.
Why can't I download?? Does Gnutella/Mactella need any special internet protocol? Or can it use http. I think we have an http port open on our LAN that I could try instead of the default (6346). Is that port for a special protocol? Any help is appreciated.

im also behind a firewall and i am having problems... i am using bearshare and hacktracer, but it seems i can never hold a connection for more than 5 seonds. within that time that connection speed can reach up to 17kbps... is this right or is it just my pc? im new to gnutella but not new to pcs. ita a shame about napster, but gnutella will hopefully keep us all amused...
 
I'm am behind a linux firewall, and I haved problem for downloading, connecting,...

I have haded in IPTABLES (kernel 2.4) a rule like:
/sbin/iptables -N FILTER
/sbin/iptables -A FILTER -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT
/sbin/iptables -A FILTER -p tcp --dport 6346 -j ACCEPT

try ...
 
to see your autoconnection work clear the discovered host BEFORE connecting to guntellahosts.com or the limewire router.
they will load new found hosts and then try to connect to them

I'm also having problems finding out IPCHAINS rules for RedHat7 or an ip_masq_* modprobe for Gnutella. Don't want to have to recompile kernel for ipmasqadm - is there *really* no alternative to ipmasqadm on Linux?

Thanks yall - death to the greedy record execs and the RIAA. I swear I will never pay for another CD after what they've done to Napster - all my music will come directly from artist sites or freeloaded from now on.
 
Tip for folks using a linux firewall:

If you're masqing your ip using ipchains, you'll need to make sure that you also forward your specific gnutella connection port through your firewall. Obviously, if your firewall is on your gateway, and you're trying to connect from a pc behind your gateway/firewall, simply accepting your connection won't work. You need to tell your gateway that traffic to/from your gnutella listen port (e.g. 6346) should be handled directly by the pc running your gnutella software.

And example of a line from my port forwarding script might help:

/usr/sbin/ipmasqadm portfw -a -P tcp -L $extip 6346 -R $pc_local_ip 6346

where $extip is your external ip addy and $pc_local_ip is the interal ip addy for your pc (usually 192.168.111.xxx)

ok, I am behind a Novel firewall. I can connect and search for files. I click on a file to start downloading it...and it will sit there and not download. It keeps going through the attempts to connect to the person and download. I am wondering if I was just too impatient, or if my firewall will prevent me from getting and recieving files?
