On the left side of my left thumb nail, a strange gap or hole began. It started where the nail is first visible from under the cuticle area. The first time, I thought it was strange, and had no idea what it was cause by, and it hurts. It hurt, I could touch what would normally be hidden by nail with my fingers, it soon after grew out, and I didn't worry anymore. Then, this morning, I noticed a new gap.
Here's the link to a photo of my nail:

The one on the left is the same as the picture on the right, just the right I circled specific things to make it clearer to see what I'm refferring to.
What is circled in red is the new gap I found in the morning, the blue is the old one that has healed a bit and mostly grew out. The yellow is odd layering, the nail is thicker closer to the blue circle, and thins in layers going towards the red circle. The part circled in green is what I think is a "splinter" I read it's caused by blood filling in gaps. I get those a lot.
Also, I do bite my nails, which is a bad habit, and I wish I'd quit, but I never bite the base of the nail where the gaps are originating from. And besides my fingers getting cold being outside for awhile, I have no memory of any kind of trauma to that nail.
Any ideas of what caused this or if it's going to keep happening?
Has this happened to anyone else?
