the_man: I suppose you're talking about shonen anime like Love Hina for example. Anime like that is directed at adolescent boys who feel they can relate to the main character because he reminds them of themselves. Also it gives them the false hope that no matter how much of a loser/low life they are a gorgeous girl (or 6 since it's usually a harem anime) will fall in love with them. For shoujo it works just about the same, the main character being portraited by your average looking girl who eventually wins the heart of the seemingly cold and reluctant bishonen.
An anime with a supermodel type girl as a main character is mostly likely targeted at young males and flooded by fan service. Exceptions may occur.
