Financial question/advice: Are we broke?

I just got married recently. We spent too much on the wedding and also I lost one of my two jobs last year. My husband works freelance and makes good money but sometimes doesn't make any money at all when he doesn't have a gig.
My checking account is overdrawn. His has $6 in it. My savings account is emptied. I sold my stocks for the wedding. All of my credit cards are maxed out so I have literally no way to pay for anything. I get paid in a week but only a few hundred dollars which doesn't come close to covering bills and medical expenses.
To me I have never been this broke in my life. I am frightened and don't know how I am going to buy a new transit card when mine runs out on Monday or how I am going to pay to go to the dentist (I broke a crown).
I lost my winter hat and freaked out because it is cold and I have no way to buy a new on, when my husband suggested that it wasn't a big deal and I could buy another one. He also says I'm overreacting because I am doing things making up boxes of things we could potentially sell, cutting coupons, and bringing coins to the bank.

He says we aren't broke because when he finishes up his current job he will be paid a few thousand dollars. Unfortunately that doesn't come close to covering our debt and expenses (we live in nyc!) and since neither of us made payments this month we will be hit with huge interest charges.
He says all Americans have credit card debt and that doesn't mean we are broke.

What do you think. Are we broke?
