Financial aid/work study question?

When a student does work study, does the amount of money the grant offers get reduce and the student has to work to fulfill what was deducted or does the money from work study get added onto the normal amount of grant money?
 
At least at my school, the student gets an actual paycheck, so nothing is deducted from what the student owes the school. If your notification letter says $500, that means you can work up to however many hours equals $500, but if you work less hours you will get less money.
