Okay, I am a college student with 5 credits left to graduate. I live in Texas with my now husband (just got married this Feb, 2010). Last year (2009), I did not work, therefore for this new FAFSA enrollment, since I am under 24 and was not married at the time, and I did not provide half of my support to my son, I had to do my FAFSA as dependent of my mother who lives in California.

My mother has been separated (not legally but my father has been gone for over 6 years diff. address) however, they are still legally married. For Fafsa, since she is legally married, I put that she is married, but for her taxes, she claims Head of Household because she does support HER HOME by herself and my sister who is also in college. Now I am having issues with my college saying that the paperwork is "conflicting" and that my mother has to change her status on her taxes, but why? She has been doing her taxes as HOH for over 7 years without any disruption from the IRS. I am 5 credits shy of graduating, I have already been dropped and have been getting letters that I have to start repaying my loans (it has only been 4 weeks that I haven't attended college!!!). What can I do? Any help, do I even have any help? Also, is there any way that I can go into my FAFSA and correct it and perhaps set it to separated even though I am under verification already? If I had to put them as separated then it was my fault since I wasn't sure what to put and did not want to falsify information.

And the reason I got dropped is because I have a balance because my idiot of a financial advisor messed my paperwork up and FAFSA canceled my funds for a whole term that's $4,000. I was never aware of that since my account was always in good standing (I check daily). Thanks.
When I filed I was not married yet. Therefore, had to put my mothers information. But now, they are telling my mom she has to change her filing ways to Married Separated, when she has been doing her taxes Head of Household for 6+ years because she qualifies to do that...I know, I searched on the IRS website what qualifies someone as HOH.
Basically, they are denying me my funds unless my mother changes her filing way or writes a written statement to them when she got separated and for how long she has been which she did already but it's been 2 months and I keep getting the run around at my college to keep resubmitting the same paperwork over and over...I am at a loss here.
