I am 20 yrs. old and I plan to go to school this coming up summer. I applied for the FAFSA but I didnt put any of parents info on there. I dont talk to my dad at all and my mom is paying tuition for my sister. She goes to a $ year college and it cost almost a little over 80,000 to attend. My mom doesnt even make that a year and there is no way she can help pay for my tuition. How can I get an independent status on my FAFSA?

When I applied for FAFSA I could skip the section that asked for my parents info and put my own income verification info in and all that. Talk to a financial aid advisor at your school to see what you have to do.

Until you can answer YES to one of the 13 dependency status questions, you are required to list your parents income. Period.

But don't be afraid to list Mom's income, because since you have a sister who is also in college it sounds like the government will consider you more financially "needy" than you think. There are a couple of questions on the fafsa you need to pay close attention to. One is "how many people are in the household". Read the criteria carefully, because even if your sister is off at college and not living with you or mom, she probably should be listed in this number. (unless she is married or over 23 years old)

Another question to pay attention to is "how many in the household will be in college". Again, if sister is eligible to be listed in the household size she would also be included here. So you 1 and sis make 2 listed as number of family members in college.

It is very important you get these particular questions correct on the fafsa as it makes a huge difference in how they calculate your EFC.
