Films to see before you die

I'm off next week looking after my hubby who is having an operation - he will be confined to the sofa for a few days so we thought we would have a bit of a film fest as there are loaRAB of what he calls cult films i've never seen.

Can anyone recommend a list of films to see before you die? Or ultimate cult films?

I hope the title of the thread was just an unfortunate choice of term to use and that your hubby is well soon. :) What genre of film do you both like. Its hard to suggest any ideas without knowing what type of films you enjoy, but I find trilogys are good if you have the time to sit down and watch them in a short space of time.

Lord of the Rings
Godfather
Star Wars

Or maybe start with something heavier and harder to follow, followed by a couple of comedies. Especially as hubby may need cheering up.

Yeah didn't think of that - he is only have an op on his knee. The type of films i mean are ones everyone is meant to have seen like the godfather etc. We like pretty much anything OH loves courtroom drama, i like chick flicks, both like horror and a bit of blood and guts.

JFK
To kill a Mockingbird
A Few Good Men
That's some CR dramas for you that are also very good. Other than that...
Godfather tril.
Indiana Jones tril.
Star wars original tril if you like that sort of thing
Zulu
All the president's Men
Matrix 1
The Ring (US version)
Anchorman
Withnail & I

If I were you, i'd take the opportunity to do some serious tv watching...Sopranos, 6 Feet Under, Twin Peaks, Deadwood, The Wire, The Shield, all fantastic and superb to watch in huge sessions on DVD...oh , definitely get season one of Murder One....24 hours of courtroom excellence!

Titanic - best film ever !!! :D

Saw
Back to the Future - all of them
Time Machine
40 year old virgin - loved it ! :)
Mean Girls - sorry just had to include it because i thought it was really good lol :)
Ghost
Sister Act - all of them :)
Amityville Horror - both original and recent one
The Exorcism of Emily Rose

I think you should see loaRAB of films before you die whether they are comedy, chick flicks or horror - i can't think of anymore at the moment - there are so many lol :)

Shawshank Redemption has to get a mention.

As Infiniteloop suggested, there are some excellent TV series out on DVD at the moment. I would highly recommend House with Hugh Laurie.

A couple of classic old films I would suggest are Random Harvest and Kind Hearts and Coronets. Not the type of film you mentioned, by great films nonetheless.

Hope hubby gets better quickly :)

To pick a few from
infiniteloop's excellent list

JFK
To kill a Mockingbird
Godfather tril.
Star wars original tril if you like that sort of thing
Zulu
All the president's Men
Withnail & I

then and add to that

12 Angry men. (THE best courtroom film ever)

Jean de Florette

Then your pretty much sorted, seriously, you cant go wrong with any of those films.

Lots of great ones already -- Here are some that occur to me, several of which are repeats, but the more votes a movie gets, the more likely it is you'll like it. In no particular order...

To Kill a Mockingbird
Groundhog Day
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Age of Innocence
Metropolitan (my all-time fave)
Say Anything
Star Wars
A Room With a View
Almost Famous
Three Colours: Red
Blade Runner
Clueless
The Godfather 1 & 2
Mean Girls
To Have and Have Not
The Philadelphia Story
Chinatown
It's a Wonderful Life
The Mortal Storm
Planet of the Apes (original)
His Girl Friday
Bringing Up Baby
Manhattan
Annie Hall
Broadcast News
Animal House
Lost in Translation
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Superman: The Movie

This list is getting stupidly long, so I'll stop and give the next person a chance to list some ofthe films they love.

Film4 are currently running 50 films to see before you die (saturday night at 11, i think) might be worth checking thier website for a complete list

...Or avoid the unashamedly self-promoting list entirely :D Honestly, avoid it like the plague, as there are only a decent handful in there.

Courtroom Dramas you say... Well there aren't many delights out there, but certainly '12 Angry Men' should be first on your list! You may also like 'Runaway Jury', although it's hardly a classic...;)

Ultimate Cult Films. I guess you'll be wanting fairly mainstream 'Blockbuster/HMV' stuff and nothing too obscure?! Try some of these - don't worry, they're all in English ;) :

Withnail & I
Brick
Shaun Of The Dead
Dawn Of The Dead
The Doom Generation
Sexy Beast
The Last Picture Show
Barbarella
Rumble Fish
Office Space
Raising Arizona
Blue Velvet
Cube

There are loaRAB of online 'best cult movie' and 'top 100 films before you die' lists to be found: google is your friend. There are also several books out there that'll do the job.

That said, the 'Best' films aren't necessarily the most 'Entertaining' films, so take a look at the boxes and a glance on imdb to see what takes your fancy :)
