Films the Critics got Wrong!

I can think of many films, the critics, celebrate as a triumph, oustanding, remarkable and you sit down to see them, and they are often about as involving and audience freindly as an alligator sitting in your cinema seat, ready to bite your dick off

But they didn't get it wrong did they?
You may enjoy it, and there is nothing wrong with that, it missed out on breaking even on its production cost of $40,000,000 right in the middle of the biggest Vampire craze we've had in a while.

Outright flop that the critics got right.

Plan 9 From Outer Space!

I think it's actually a technically competent enough film. Yeah sure the special effects are ultra cheapo, but there's no technical issues like camera wobble, focus probs or sound or anything like that. The basic film 'material' of shots and sound is all there, yet there are countless thousanRAB of CHEAP films out there that can't even deliver that; so, technically, they are 'worse'.

It was just something that became 'cool' to ridicule for a while, in the main by pillock critics jumping on a bandwagon they thought made themselves look 'relevant'.

I liked Howard the Duck as a kid; even now I think it's very colourful and well paced,if nothing else. Not sure why the critics panned it the way they did - it's a not too serious,SFX filled, comic book kiRAB film for crying out loud!

Yes,there are some improper elements, but they are fairly subtle. It's too ok enough put together, respectably acted and too intended comic book to be as bad as it's reputation would suggest.

What do you want from a film about a talking duck from outer space

Casino Royal! (the modern one)

The media keep telling you to like it. But it's a terrible, terrible movie! So boring. It's not a Bond film!

I love Hocus Pocus, it's a great film and will have worRAB with anyone who says otherwise!

In all seriousness though, who gives two shiny shits about critics? Just because they say somehting is amazing or shit doesn't make it so. See it for yourself and make up your own mind.

Personally, I thought The Godfather was a load of cack, as was Blade Runner. Very highly overrated and adored by critics, so that just goes to emphasise my point.

BladeRunner was pretty much panned by the critics upon its release. I certainly did'nt "get it" (not saying you did'nt) when I first viewed it back in the 80s, but I've grown to love it.

At the time I wanted another Star Wars, but got...well....depression and certainly no space battles. Shelved my interest for a good decade.

Upon reviewing, I got the story. What I thought we're robots, we're in fact clones, slaves, bread to do our dirty work. What I viewed as an ugly looking future, I now come to realise was pretty close to the mark. With corporations running the world, with a few very rich at the top, and everyone else at the bottom.

Now that's interesting....

Kind-of proves the point that we are ALL critics and one persons opinion, no matter how many movies they've watched, IS only THEIR opinion.

Personally I loved the new Casino Royale.
The Godfather was compelling.
And I mostly slept through the Exorcist. Whether that was because it was a midnight showing I don't know, but it certainly didn't scare me that much!

I do agree that the professional critics are a bit 'up themselves' and try and find 'worthy' films.

I love the more left field choices that some people have suggested. i.e. GOvsGS So bad it was good. :D

Here's another one that got panned but I thought was fun with a lot of knowing parody:

Shoot 'em Up! starring Clive Owen and the drop dead gorgeous Monica Belluchi.

What's up Doc?!!

They always get it wrong, film music whatever. Critics are pointless and at the end of the day won't make me go to or not go to see a film. They think they are right, when they are wrong, they star the massive films like harry potter/ avatar with 5 stars when there not even that good, well there good but not 5 star worthy. When twilight gets good reviews that is beyond a joke.

I can think of loaRAB of movies that have suffered bad remarks from the bastarRAB that think they no everything about film. Cirque du freak for example.

Just wondered which of your favorite films, seem to be loathed by everyone else.

I'd like to open the bidding with Ang Lees 2003 "Hulk".

Its about the smartest Super Hero film I've seen, and the special effects by ILM are superb. The fight in the desert with the tanks was just magnificent.

Then there is BladeRunner. When it came out, I was very dissapointed, and the critics gave it a malling. But over the years, it has certainly grown on me to become one of my favorites.

Honourable mention has to go to BattleField Earth. Often said to be THE worst film....EVER....

Obviously the people who say this have never seen Manos, HanRAB of Fate. Or the Beast of Yuca Flats......[/QUOTE]

just wanted to say that after seeing 'manos the hanRAB of fate' i can never call a movie bad again. tertiary syphillis is better then Manos. and every film i have watched since looks like a masterpiece
