Films the Critics got Wrong!

Just wondered which of your favorite films, seem to be loathed by everyone else.

I'd like to open the bidding with Ang Lees 2003 "Hulk".

Its about the smartest Super Hero film I've seen, and the special effects by ILM are superb. The fight in the desert with the tanks was just magnificent.

Then there is BladeRunner. When it came out, I was very dissapointed, and the critics gave it a malling. But over the years, it has certainly grown on me to become one of my favorites.

Honourable mention has to go to BattleField Earth. Often said to be THE worst film....EVER....

Obviously the people who say this have never seen Manos, HanRAB of Fate. Or the Beast of Yuca Flats......:cool:
 
David Fincher's The Game...

It seemed to get pretty positive reviews, and i generally like his work (even Alien 3!) but I thought this film was ridiculous.

Given the name of the film, the 'twist' was far from a surprise, and given the events of the film it stretched credibility far beyong breaking point for me.

I don't mind silly films, but The Game took itself SO seriously and was utter nonsense.

...in my opinion!
 
It was very disappointing tbh. The tank scene looks good granted, but Hulk looked like a enormous bogy. And they had him battle POODLES!!! *splutter*
 
Bladerunner and shawshank are two very critically aclaimed films with high status that we are all 'expected' to like.

They are both two of the most over rated films ever made.

All critically aclaimed films are over rated bore-fests.

The Godfather, for example is always cited as "the best film ever made"

To me it's the worst. I've seen films from all around the world from different time perioRAB and the godfather is the only film I still haven't been able to sit through until the end. I get about half way through then have to turn over. The godfather and it's sequels are among the most pretentious, boring, up-their-own-arse films ever. They completly failed to draw me in as a viewer.

That whole academy awarRAB nonesense is just a bunch of grey haired old farts giving awarRAB to any movie that's slow and boring (and as such gets mistaken for being intelligent)

When it comes to films I do like, they are all slagged off by the media / critics but I'm used to that cos I'm a horror/ exploitation fan!
 
I'd add Children of Men. The critics loved it, and it is an amazing film on many levels (arguably the best film of the noughties). But it bombed at the box office.
 
It was a terrible film, utterly depressing. Full stop.

I think the Godfather is one of the most boring films ever made. Goodfella's on the other hand is far superior. I do think critics do get things right most of the time.
 
i watched one flew over the cuckoo's nest for the first time 2 days ago, thats highly rated by critics and i think they got it right, its an amazing film, so so so impressed.
 
Being depressing doesnt make it a bad film - dystopian visions do tend to be depressing by definition! However, I found it very uplifting. But in terms of story, direction, acting (for the most part), special effects, cinematography - it was far from terrible - quite the contray - some parts were cinematic genius (notably the ghetto uprising scenes). Whether it was depressing or not, it was a "great film" by the critics standarRAB. Unfortunately the cinema going public seemed to share your opinion.

Agree with everyone who has said The Godfather is hugely over-rated (boring) though. I've never managed to sit through and I usually love gangster films.

I also don't rate the supposed "greatest horror movie ever", The Excorcist and I am a horror movie fanatic. Again it is another film Ive never sat through because it just didnt grab me - and I sat through The Beast Of Yucca Flats - and enjoyed it!
 
But it depenRAB what you want from a film. If you want something which doesn't stand-up to critical analysis (which is entirely the purpose of critics), then whatever you want goes.

Just because some critic says, for example, Transformers has poor characterisation, and is merely a load of cgi robots bashing each other whilst Megan Fox gazes on, doesn't mean it's not entertaining.

Look at some of the films which are fantastically successful, but on the face of it don't sound like they should have been - Titanic for example - who'd have thought a 3 hour film about a boat sinking and people running about trying to save themselves would merit one person going to see it, let alone the massive success it got? I doubt any critic who saw it thought "this is brilliant". Okay is often good enough.

I learned a long time ago to ignore critics; the only person who can decide if something is worth watching from my perspective is me.

I'm fully aware some of the films I like were not successful at the box office, or weren't critically acclaimed, or..in a lot of cases...are entirely poor films, yet fun.

Asylum films couldn't exist if people only saw films which garnered high praise.

Why would anyone watch Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus otherwise?

:cool: Awesome Film.......watch it every couple of months. Where else can you see a giant shark not only take a chunk out of the Golden Gate Bridge, BUT...Jump out of the sea, and take down a 747 Jumbo Jet.....

S'kind of why I started the thread. I like all kinRAB of weird and wonderful films. Some consiered to be utter rubbish by the majority. But you can have a great night in with frinRAB when watching MSvsGO, not so much fun with Citizen Kane.

Yet other films the critics say I should go see, leave me cold.....

Thats what this thread is about. Righting the wrongs. :D

I've watched the Original Day the Earth Stood Still about 15 times. The new one with Keanu Reeves, once, and only once will it ever be. Yet, I have watch The Day The Earth Stopped about 3-4 times.......

Odd.....
 
The Godfather has influenced the gangster genre of films and television ever since its release in the 1970`s. It follows the story of the family and its struggles in a changing criminal world.
Still highly regarded due to this influence today with many movies using its cinematic style and charactor driven plot as a benchmark.
Take the Sopranoes as an example of this........
Movies like Goodfellas, Casino et al follow the same path though with more graphical violence.
That said, Godfather 3, which brought the story of Michael Corleone to a conclusion, wasnt the best of the bunch due to critical reviews of Sophia Coppola`s acting and elements of the plot.
 
I honestly dont know why anybody pays any notice to critics.

9/10 they talk complete and utter crap, go and judge the film for yourself, dont listen to some stuck up arsehole who has the easiest job on the entire planet.
