Films that suprised you?

Same here, a friend loaned me the DVD when it came out, she raved about it so I thought I better watch it. I loved it.
Going to see it live in May.

Fight Club - I was put off by the title, so didn't watch it for years. It turns out the actual fight club bit is a tiny part of the film and the whole thing is excellent.

For me it would be "The Merchant of Venice" bought it cheap and thought yeah right Al PAcino as shylock this will be bad.
Not so he turns in a heck of a performance
He is a great actor I just somehow thought Shakespear wouldnt work with his style.

on the other hand I expected much from House of flying daggers but it failed to please.
Wonderful camera work and scenery shame about the plot.

I watched this yesterday. I probably would have been put off watching it for the same reason if it hadn't been rated 5 stars and starred Edward Norton, who I really like. As you say, it turned out to be excellent, especially early on.
The later part of the film was a little too surreal for my taste, but still enjoyable.
The fighting was pretty brutal though.

I thought Ray with Jamie Foxx was a great movie and i do not even like that kind of music. Walk the Line and Munich were two other movies I thought I would hate but they are now some of my favourite films.

The Commitments 1991

Its not a movie I would ever have gone to see at the cinema nor is it a movie I would have bought.

A friend loaned me their copy and I really enjoyed it.
Similar thing happened with Donny Darko 2001 and The Barber 2001.

Good job I have frienRAB with an eye for good movies.
I now own all three myself.

Same here - it took me years to get around to watching it and now it's one of my favourite films.

Other films which have surprised me recently are:

Children of Men - much better than I thought it would be.

Borat - I thought I was going to find it offensive; I haven't laughed so much in ages.

Brick - I was looking forward to this one but was bored rigid.

Music and Lyrics, not really a 'chick flick' guy but the trailer caught my interest enough to go see it when the wife wanted to go. I'm not saying anything like I went to see it only because it had Drew Barrymore in it....nothing of the sort really ;)

Somewhere In Time

- Christopher Reeve
- Jane Seymour

It was the film that made me think of Christopher as a real actor - not just the Superman type hero I had seen him previously play

Watch it with a box of tissues ...
