It's basically South Korea's answer to "Ghost". The movie started out funny and charming and then.... BAM!.... tragedy strikes and the rest of the film wallows in sadness. There's no Whoopi Goldberg to save it.
If you've ever seen a South Korean film, then you'll know what I mean. They love sad stories.
Just watched Atonement... very sad. Recently watched The Painted Veil (2006), which brought a tear to my eye. Another recent sad watch was The Wings of the Dove.
I think a lot of the choices so far are typical 'weepy' choices, ie films with tragic themes designed to invoke the tears at certain points. In terms of films that put me in a generally sad mood, the last to do so was I Never Promised You A Rose Garden, a sadly-forgotten 1970s indictment of the harsh realities and neglectfulness of the mental health system, as seen through the eyes - and soul - of a middle-class teenager who becomes 'lost' after being committed to an institution by her parents. It has some typical Roger Corman exploitation elements but is a quite harrowingly graphic and unrelentingly grim affair, with an excellent roster of character actors playing both staff and various inmates.
Born Free. The first time I saw it I started to cry halfway through. Every time I've seen it since I've been sobbing as soon as the song came on at the start.
