Films that everyone should see

I was just using you as an example. ;)

Maybe the OP could clarify, but I don't think the point of the thread was to just list a random list of people's favourite movies. Or maybe it was and I've completely misinterpreted.

I suppose there are some films everyone should probably see just on the basis on them being classic movies, and others which people should see because they are eye opening / life affirming / thought-provoking, whatever. My own suggestion might be something like 'Dead Man Walking', which I enjoyed partly because it made me examine my own opinions about the death penalty. Or maybe 'Schindlers List' is something everyone should probably see. The traffic warden one sounRAB good as well, though.:D

I pointed out the same thing in a recent 'whats the best film ever' thread, and got the answer from some that 'favourite' and 'best' are 'the same thing arent they?'.

Erm,no. Best film means what do you think is the best film ever made, the film that stanRAB above all others as a work of art,a work of genius etc etc.

I think films that change your perception about something (something important) should be seen by everyone.

Stuff like Blood Diamond (which I just saw last week) is useful because it makes the horror behind the news headlines somehow more vivid and real for us lot sat on our comfy sofas in the West.

The other film I saw last week was Black Book, and this is a good one for challenging our ideas of black-and-white good-and-evil during the Second World War. Another one that changes our preconceptions is K19: The Widowmaker.

One that attacks our romanticised view of the wild west genre is the western Unforgiven, which shows the real unromanticised horror of the wild west "gunfight".

The problem with these types of "films that everyone should see" is that they're harrowing and not everyone wants to see them! But they're important films IMO. My suggestion of Team America was half-joking, but I think it makes some serious points and challenges our preconceptions.

The Fountain, directed by Darren Aronofsky (he of Pi and Requiem for a Dream fame).

It's one that really divides people, you'll either love it to bits or detest it with a real passion, only way to find out is to watch it.

Personally I love it to bits. :D

Blazing Saddles
Pulp Fiction
Trainspotting
Original Starwars
Superman 1-4
Footloose
Grease
Clockwork Orange
The Shining
Short Circuit
Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back
National Lampoons Senior Trip

Exactly. I'm just personally recommending some of the films which i personally really enjoyed. If you have problems with mine that's your thing but it is a personal choice. I may not particularly agree with some of the films you have listed but hey, it's not really my place to say...

However i would like to swop Love Actually with Schindler's list as i watched it today and it truly moved me.

But I'm sticking with The Scream Trilogy.
