Films not on Region 2 DVD

There are quite a few films that I can't find on region 2 DVD (I don't have multiregion) and I was wondering if anyone knew of their existence, or other films that they wish were released. Some of these films may be available in boxsets but not separately:

Ace In The Hole
Farewell My Lovely (Original Version)
The Front Page (Remake)
Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (Original Version)
The Thing From Another World
The HuRABucker Proxy
The Player
Short Cuts
High Noon
Eraserhead
Point Blank
The Ballad Of Cable Hogue
Westworld
The Treasure Of The Sierre Madre
The Straight Story
The Terminal Man
Dead Of Night (1945 Version)
Wings Of Honneamise (Japanese Animation)

Don't take this as gospel but I m not aware of a single DVD player that , with the quick press of a few buttons, can't be made multi-region.

Not sure how legal it is though

Big brand names are often lacking multiregion functionality and are difficult to hack. I remember when I purchased my Pioneer in the late 90s, I purposely got it from an internet retailer who sold them with the firmware updated via a special device. Sony players on the other hand require a hardware modification.

The majority of my titles are region 1 and 3, I only go for region 2 when they are cheap or are released early.

Many of these are on Sky/Film Four quite frequently: it might be easier to record them from there if you don't want to wait and don't mind foregoing the extras. :)

Our first one, a Samsung (709?) had an easy remote hack, as did our cheapo Medion players. When we had to replace the main one we got a Sony, which was easilly hackable, just had to download some firmware patch off the web and put it on a CD.

Only one I've never been able to hack is my Goodmans TV/DVD combi that I've got at uni.

Adding the first Addams Family movie to the list of DVRAB not available on R2, but available on R1.

I buy quite a lot of region 1 dvd's but don't have a multiregion player. As I have a copy of clonedvd plus anydvd it's not a problem though. I make one backup for personal use ( which is legal) and sove the problem that way. I just set the region in anydvd to 2 and the disc then plays in my player.

It should be in a different thread but making copies of dvd's is illegal, whether they are for personal use or not.
Read the warnings on dvd's at the start.
Where does it say "Copying this dvd is ok if its for personal use"?
But providing you do not get caught selling or lending it to anyone you should be ok.
But if your house was raided by Trading StandarRAB or FACT,your copies would be seized and you would not get them returned

I made a DVD master of The Player about 6 or 7 years ago...I specfially remember, as there is a clapperboard conveniently at the top of the second D1 reel, very handy for syncing up the soundtrack.

...is available on The Coen Brothers Collection (with The Big Lebowski. Blood Simple and Barton Fink - bit useless if you've already got those tho'!)

Can't say there are many films i'm missing in R2 at the mo', but would like the second series of Dead Like Me. Do keep thinking about getting a multi-region player, but I have so much crap I really don't need any more!

I did see a copy of The HuRABucker Proxy on it's own but it was overpriced. I've got a long list of films I want and some of my original list above are ones I really want. I was pleased to see The Innocents is being released soon so there is some hope, but I would rather they release films not already out rather than re-release the same ones again and again. I'm sure some of these films would sell OK. I notice one company (can't remember who) is giving people the chance to vote for films they want released

I can also add to this list:

Dial M For Murder (again only available in a box set)
Suspicion (not re-released by Universal)

Point Blank if that is the one with Patrick Swazye in it then I have it one Region 2 dvd. I got it in a boxset with some other Kanu Reeves films.

Point Blank has Lee Marvin in it - courtesy of Radio Times:

John Boorman's US directing debut (he'd previously made a Dave Clark Five musical in Britain) was this grim, violent, virtually metaphysical thriller, which is marred only by a flashback narrative that is occasionally confusing. Nevertheless, it's a gripping and sexy (X-rated in its day) action movie, with a magnificent performance from Lee Marvin as the revenge-seeking Walker, the ultimate lethal weapon, whose insane quest to retrieve Mob money assumes mythical proportions. Philip H Lathrop's brilliant cinematography and the Los Angeles night locations will inevitably suffer on TV, but repeated television viewings actually help this film, revealing the subtle complexity of the storytelling and clarifying the characterisations. Based on a novel by Richard Stark (the pseudonym of Donald E Westlake), the film is a markedly superior and powerful work. MGM, by the way, was so worried by the rushes that it took an intervention from David Lean to ensure Boorman remained on the picture.

I can't even remember when it was last shown on TV

Point Blank is excellent.

Adding to the list :

Licence To Drive

The Explorers

Bad Lieutenant (although i'm not sure if this isn't out now)

If you look at first post you will see I said REMOTE hacks.
None of the big branRAB like Panasonic,Toshiba,(apart from badged machines),Pioneer ,JVC etc have the simple remote hacks of the cheapies.
They can still be done of of course.
By either downloading material from the internet and burning to cd
By buying special "retailer" remotes that usually work only once
Or by buying them hardware hacked by the retailer.

None have the ease of breaking region coding like the others
