I loved the ending from The Illusionist, pretty unexpected. Also, I think this is the best movie from 2006. :)

Oh, did I ever!!

Another movie with a haunting ending is "Match Point". Those last two minutes really got to me. I kept thinking about it for days later. I just sat there thinking how many times that has happened in real life. How a person would live knowing the truth and just not say anything like in most movies where someone breaks down. Here, nobody broke down, it was a stone cold reality check that not everyone has a conscience.

Yes yes...I agree with Before Sunset and Memento too. :D For Memento, I kinda got it in the end, but I still had to watch the DVD again in chronological order to fully get it.

I have to agree with you about both these films. :)

Before Sunset: It was just the perfect ending for a great film. Such a simple, subtly played out final scene that just made you smile. You just got the feeling that Linklater had this sly grin on his face knowing how the ending was such a tease for the audience. You just wanted 5 more minutes to know what would happen.

Memento: At the end I was just sitting there, saying "What?!" I couldn't stop thinking about the film afterwards. I think it's one of those films you could watch over and over again...each time trying to just comprehend the storyline just that little bit more.

I have a hard time watching movies when I basically know how everything goes. Rocky has been described to me since I was a little girl by more than 3 people. I know what happens, how it happens, the music that plays while it happens, etc, etc. I'm thinking of seeing Rocky Balboa just to say I saw a Rocky film in the theater.

I do plan on seeing Rocky someday. I mean, it's a classic for a reason.

I haven't mentioned of my favorite endings ever. The ending of Signs... It's so subtle, like the rest of the movie. That shot of Mel Gibson with his faith returned. It was so beautiful.

And another great ending is Go, "So, what are we doing for New Year's" Actually the whole ending is pretty amusing!

Yeah, it's not really just surprise endings.

I've seen parts of Wait Until Dark--but I've never watched the whole thing. I guess I will now

Is there any reason that you haven't seen Rocky? The first and second ones are the best. I always liked the fourth one, but I don't think that is a fan favorite at all.

Thanks for starting this thread.

Pretty good list.

I agree, The Departed is definitely a newer one to be added to the list.

Has anyone seen Wait Until Dark? I've never seen it but it sounded interesting.

I've seen about 22 of the movies listed. Several that I haven't seen look interesting.

Anabela & Angie, a link to the list is posted at filmcritic.com so maybe you can access the list from their homepage. :) It's on the first page, to the side with many other links.

taovande - You're so right! The Departed had such a wicked ending! Everyone in the theater was gasping.

Lonely Smile - I have seen only 17 of those movies which is only like 34% of the list  I'm of those people who has never seen Rocky. All my friends give me the look when I tell them I've never seen one Rocky film.

The sad thing is that I've seen less than a handful of those movies on the list. I was glad to see Before Sunset and Rocky make the list.

I can see the List.

A pretty decent list...Love that they put in Some Like It Hot.

As for new movies from 2006 I would add in The Departed.

I think its the webpage Cause I couldnt read it either. :( I was thinking it was my pc 2.

Angie

I would love to read that article but something is wrong with my pc or maybe it's something wrong with the webpage. :(

The list is here. :) I know we have a Surprising Endings Thread but this one is for the best endings, surprising or not.

The list is amazing and you can skip the movies you haven't seen so you're not spoiled. It discusses the best endings of all time, of course they mean, endings, like the last few minutes of a film not the last 20 minutes. Read theirs, what are yours? :D

I will discuss my faves here without spoilers. If you haven't seen the movies I'm being vague and very general. If I say something wiggy, it will be in spoiler space.

From the list I agree with Fight Club. That ending is mind blowing! I remember 2 days later still going "what the hey??? wow..." But I JUMPED when I saw they included Before Sunset at #20 because the first time I saw that ending, I just sat there, like jaw ON THE FLOOR, totally going nuts about how perfect it was. I'm glad I'm not the only one!

Another one was Memento at #19! I think my initial thought after the movie ended was "what a huge bastard!" They totally had me. Casablanca also... :sigh: A History of Violence too has one of those gripping endings because of all that everyone's been through.. It's too much and you know it by looking in their eyes and paying attention to that eerie silence.

Some that are not on filmcritic's list. The Prestige. It's incredibly beautiful, in a cinematic way. Titatic has one of those ending that is design to please the romantics and I have to say, make me cry. Spider-Man has a kick ass ending! Peter walking to the camera with that amazing voice over "I'm Spider Man"... Gives me chills. Dead Man's Chest! What a scream! That's what I call a reveal, baby!

Let's discuss some BAD endings. Red Eye.. It basically came very close to ruining everything that came before it. The Break Up, it's one of those "oh no they didn't!" but yes, they did. Bastards!
