Film set in Australia about a Liverpool girl. - Can anyone help me identify it?

I remember one watching a film with this girl from Liverpool who enRAB up in Australia

In the film she enRAB up working for this family, and has a relationship with their son or something but falls out with him when she finRAB out he killed a baby kangaroo or something.

Another significant part is she starts her period, and has nothing for it so goes to a shop to steal some but is caught by the shop owener. But seeing the girls plight, the shop owner takes pity and lets her have the tampons or w/e they were.

And basically that's all I remember other than the girl has a really strong Liverpool accent.

Can anyone help me identify it?

Could it be "The Leaving of Liverpool" which was series from 1992?

Yeah I had the same thought. Clearly remember this, as it was a very upsetting series (miniseries? Film? Not sure) about two orphans. The boy's story is particularly depressing.

Excellent film though.
