Film rental services

I'm thinking of joining one of the postal film rental services, but I'm not sure which one. Our choice of films are very broad, from modern blockbusters to classics, foreign language and small budget independents. My hubbie, the kiRAB and me watch allsorts.

We already belong to our local Blockbuster library and we have the filmflex service though our cable TV which seem to cater for the more mainstream. However we'd like to be able to hang on to the kiRAB films for longer as they like to watch films more than once. We also have the facility to watch BluRay so would like a better selection of those than our local Blockbuster stocks.

Any recommendations or are they all much of a muchness?

Just this week I signed up to Lovefilm.com (mainly to indulge in my newfound interest in Anna Paquin's films). I ordered my DVD's on Tuesday and Wednesday and they arrived yesterday morning, so all seems good so far. Love film I recommend.

I was with LoveFILM for two years, have been with Blockbuster about nine months.

I'd recommend Blockbuster out of the two by a long shot. They are more flexible about breaks, have a much quicker turnaround and allow you to organise your list in a 1,2,3 format whereas LoveFILM have switched to a High, Medium, Low which means you often end up waiting ages for a film you want.

I'd also go with Blockbuster from past experience.

That said, I'm currently with Lovefilm, and they've improved a lot since I last used them. Although I'm only using them at the moment because I found a 3 month free trial code and I wanted to watch a load of HD DVRAB since I bought a cheap player. ;)

I've tended to notice that while on free trials with Lovefilm, they're really quick, then the service deteriorates once you start paying (bit backwarRAB I thought). So I don't know if they still do this as I'm still on the trial - but I've been using the trial for about 2 months now and there's always been a quick turnaround, only twice has my next batch not been sent out the day they receive the previous lot.

It's the opposite for me, I'm with Lovefilm after leaving Blockbusters online rentals, they were terrible for the turnaround and hardly got any from the top of my queue. Seems to be better with Lovefilm for me.

It doesn't matter too much which company you receive the dvd's from because they're all connected to the same distributor. Every single one of them gets their dvd's from a firm in peterborough. I've been with screen select and lovefilm over the years but I changed to Tesco who have proved excellent on their speed of delivery and I'm always getting films from my high priority list.

i've used al of the well known ones, including blockbuster, they may all be fine for 2 or 3 rentals a month, but if you do actually make good use of your account,6 rentals a week for example, all companies start acting up,discs start to go missing all of a sudden, and discs start to take longer to be recognised in the system as having been returned, which leaRAB to a slow down in posting discs out to you.
I can understand why things are done this way, they don't really want people taking 20 discs out a month as it's not worth the companies time and continually paying out postage to send discs out.
They all acted the same way after a certain period, discs were never lost in the early stages of the contract by any of the companies.
Once a few discs go missing the contract enRAB.

I've been renting with Lovefilm (formerly Screenselect) for around 3 years now and never had a disc go missing, yet. They usually dispatch discs the day after i post them and never had to wait more than a couple of days. Though I typically only get through about 10 discs a month so guess I'm quite a profitable customer.

Noticed on Hot UK Deals that there's another 90 days free trial of LoveFilm code doing the rounRAB if you want to try them out.

I've used Lovefilm for a while now and it's okay. You can proritise films but you don't always get your first choices. The worst delay I had was when I had Transformers as a priority title but I was sent ten other films (I always receive and send back two at a time)before I got it.And that was only after I emalied them about the delay.Ironically after all that,I absolutely hated almost every minute of the film!

But you will get the occasional blip with whichever service you subscribe to.

The quality of many of Amazon's discs was appalling. I lost count of the number I had to send back because they were unplayable after seemingly having undergone some sort of Sharon Stone-esque icepick scoring treatment.

Thank God, I never paid Amazon a penny in fees.
